I wanted to love this book. It came highly recommended, and please ... it's Teen Angst. Y'all know I love Teen Angst! But I never really understood the appeal of Alaska, the title character, even if I tried to take on the perspective of a teenage boy -- which I do believe I am capable of doing with a fair amount of skill.

I'm going to try another John Green, though.

it’s so crazy to me that i was probably reading this book for the first time around age 12. although it’s a tad bit cheesy and “smarter than you” vibes with all the private school quoting famous people and quirky hobbies, i found that i really enjoyed the themes explored and the characters. talking about loneliness, sex, coming of age, and death are some big themes to explore in such a small book. i was still shocked by the main plot point because everything seemed so normal up until then, but i really loved the scene where they drive through where the accident was and realize that they are alive and continuing through the labyrinth. how special it is to realize you’re alive despite the suffering happening around you and to know that you can make it through. it’s hard to understand where others are coming from sometimes, and confusing, and they must take their own path.
