I think they got to me
This book made me realise how deeply ingrained the idea of the role of a woman as a mother is in my head. This woman is a mother, yet she isn’t inherently nurturing and it kind of made me hate her. I couldn’t really understand her decisions, probably because I’ve spent my entire life taking it as a given that I want to be a mum one day and I guess I just couldn’t fathom how chasing a small thrill could override a maternal instinct. I think it was a really good exploration of what it means to be a woman and whether we automatically fit into this role of mother or are just told that we should.

An uneasy and uncomfortably relatable book. I think we all know a mother like Leda in our lives, whether we recognize it or not.

Ferrante's bread and butter. She has some fascinatingly harsh but real thoughts on reluctant motherhood. The writing is just as smooth and compelling, allowing the reader to understand the uncomfortable truths with the main character's life as a young mother. The ending was a little too abrupt for my tastes though, and the whole thing could have been a couple of chapters shorter.
4.5/5
I loved the vibe of this short novel. Elena Ferrante has definitely became one of my favourite novelists through the last few years. The Lost Daughter is about motherhood, and the quiet unravelling and obsession of the main character. Excellent!
