I couldn't think more highly of Baum's imagination and for the superlative, nostalgic film it inspired. Outside of that, 3 stars is being fairly generous; there were none of the most charming parts from the movie I grew up with nor character development.

Oh, and spoiler alert: the slippers weren't even ruby!

Omg, what a useless effing book! I understand that it's a children's book, but come on, seriously?!

I understand that Dorothy is a young girl (age never defined, but the way she speaks she's got to be under 10), but how can in be that every creature to roam Oz is so simpleminded as portrayed in this book? How can a character be looked upon as not-a-villain when he sends said 10-year-old on an assassination assignment?

I understand that since the book was written so long ago in a very different world, the tone might be alien, but when compared to contemporaries like CS Lewis and JRR Tolkein, Frank Baum just sucks as a story teller. The only reason I forced myself to finish (and the fact that it took me a week to read a children's chapter book should say something) was a determination to understand the source of all the movies and tv shows. How anyone loved this book enough to adapt it in the first place I'll never know.

Incredibly cute. I ADORE the artist, which is why I got this book.

3.5☆

Not quite like the movie, but that is not a bad thing.
