This book thoroughly annoyed me. I didn't like the dumbed down way the author wrote. Every detail is followed up with interior monologue or cloaked conversation to explain the significance to the reader. It also felt as if the book slogged on and on. I was a bit surprised to find out who the killer was but it felt like cheating because s/he wasn't on the list of suspects until the last chapter.

Oddly enough, the protagonist would make a million mentions of her Suburban truck and for some strange reason, everyone calls everyone by name, even if they're family ("more cookies, Hannah", "thank you, Hannah", "good afternoon, Hannah" nobody just says "thank you" or "good afternoon?" nobody?!). In the small town they live in, everyone gives up suspects for a bag of cookies.

The story seemed to slog on but the characters were likable enough. I realize that this story was written almost 15 years ago so perhaps this was the style then?

A little long, but enjoyable. I especially appreciated the recipes inside!

I know this series has gone on for a long time, so I thought I would start it. It has not aged well. Problematic themes: fat shaming, and a mother who's obsessed with marrying off her 29 year old daughter before it's too late, and a main character that hasn't heard of boundaries. None of these things are surprising in a book from 2000 though.

I have a hard time getting into mysteries that depend on the MC being so much smarter than the police officers working on the case. I don't think I'll continue with the series.
