Year of New Authors

Against the advice of her sister, a young women harkens to the dark call of a sinister market and becomes addicted to the crops they sell.

I'd read somewhere that Goblin Market was a difficult and complex poem to interpret, and admittedly my own initial reading of 'well that was the sexiest farmers' market I've ever seen' is a little inadequate. It's a deeply erotic poem, of the sapphic, incest and occassional violence kind, with hurried kisses, frantic sucking of (fruit) juices off another's body and (fruit) being forced upon a young woman by angry male goblins. The conclusion, though a happy one, is strange and a little bewildering, and leaving you only the clear points that you shouldn't buy from goblins and the 'fruit' is clearly not supposed to be fruit.

So what does it all mean?
I don't bloody know. Here's some interpretations, pick one while I get myself a drink:

1. Ladies, don't give yourself to rakehells and goblins. Instead, save yourself and sate your quivering, frustrated lust on other ladies who won't get you pregnant. Then you can go on to have a happy heterosexual life later with your husband, because being gay is just a phase apparently. Ignore the fact the other lady is your sister in this story *hurk*.

2. Ladies, don't do opium. Seriously, that shit's bad for you and twisted, suspicious foreigners sell it in a very unsubtle metaphor.

3. Something about Eve? Eve would have been saved from the serpent had she a sister to slap some sense into her, rather than a dumbass Adam who went 'cool, free food' and thus sealed mankinds fate?

4. The poisonous temptation of Bacchic enjoyment, alluding to the wine and fruit filled orgies of Pagan times.

5. A critique of buying options in Victorian agriculture (I am not even joking)

Right got my drink. So anyway, my own interpretation is that I don't have one. I don't consider this a nonsense poem, but a zen one, a Rorschach test that defies saying anything concrete about what Rossetti's seductive fruit really is. It is still a beautiful tale of magic and sensuality at it's core, both very effective in its atmosphere and passion. It's an erotic dream and a lovely read.

Masterpiece. Enough said.

If you love Holly Black's stories of Faerie, or Seanan McGuire's Wayward Children series, I highly recommend reading this!
