I was really surprised by this book. I've read quite a few books by Margaret Peterson haddix and they've all been very good, but this book wasn't. Ella wasn't a likable character and neither was any of the other characters. The story was slow and uneventful. I wish she had done more with Ella's story, but she basically made each chapter the same as the previous.
The second book I've read this month where the ending left me incredibly annoyed.
Other than that, I really enjoyed this!

Reading this book as an adult was such a different experience. It had a lot more heavy themes than what I realized. Everything went right over my head as a child. I enjoyed this book but a lot of the charm that it held when I was younger was lost reading it now.

I read this in, like, middle school and really liked it. Basically I just have really fond memories of it. and there's a great twist to the Cinderella fairytale.
Though the beginning was slow and seemed to follow a mid grade retelling route of predictability, this book turned out great. It ended up hitting some more adult themes (in a subtle-ish way) and an interesting take on the Classic fairytale’s end. I really enjoy Ella and her headstrong ways. I think I will have to get the next book.
A lot of twists and definitely a retelling. Not the best retelling of Cinderella I read, but entertaining.
