I’ve decided. This series is crack. There’s something that bothers me in each one but I get addicted and continue coming back for more.

Overall, I enjoyed this installment. In terms of the three so far, this one had the most going on. The most action and moved the plot forward. Most of it took place outside of the academy, which means we get to see more of the world and vast creatures that are within it.

The side characters have less place in this one (at least it feels like). Jaxon, I don’t know… the author did him dirty. It was possible to have a love interest switch from him to Hudson without wrecking a character. His entire personality from Crave - gone. Hudson is easily my favourite. Very well-balanced character.

My gripes with this book:

Hudson & romance. Ironic, eh. In the last book, maybe it’s because he was in Grace’s head and not alive fully but their connection was amazing! In this one, it’s less so. I get the author was trying to seem like Grace was flip-flopping between her emotions but right from the beginning, it’s clear who she has more of a connection with. Her struggle is to hold onto her broken one with Jaxon with some guilt sprinkled in there. Sadly, I felt like her and Hudson’s chemistry was lessened in this one. Saying that, I still lived for their scenes.

Why the time jump? At the start of book 2, there’s a time jump, which makes sense considering our main character and narrator was in stone. But the time jump at the start of this one felt cheap. At the end of 2, we’re left with a cliffhanger I had HOPED to see the outcome and reactions of at the start of this. But clearly, the author skipped the drama and jumped ahead to her “deciding.”

It’s long. Like, it reads long. These are big books but I’ve read plenty of big books that don’t read long, and these do. This one especially. Despite having the most plot, there’s so many details I end up skimming out of boredom. I have a feeling this one and the next could have been consolidated into one. Book 1 was perfectly paced. Book 2 started very slow but once I got into it, I struggled to put it down. Not this one. It felt like this book dragged on.

I think I’ll be taking a break from the series before the next one. I enjoy these books and don’t want to end up hating them. I also miss my ebooks, since I’m reading these as physical copies from my library. Plus the final book is out at the end of the month, and it’s on order from my library and I’m a few down the list. Probably best to spread the next two out so my wait doesn’t feel as long.

Saying all that, I’m happy I’m reading this series. It’s good. There’s a lot going for it. I think it’s the writing that’s annoying me the most (the pacing of it). I don’t think this is a series I’d buy for my shelves, nor ever reread but I’m happy I like it enough to read it once.
