I love the world she creates, so intricate and gripping. However sometimes I wish it was a bit easier to follow the thought process. I know things aren't always clear to kaylin and we understand as she does. Nevertheless love the series so far

Stolen goods are so much easier…
Still avoiding her magic lessons—yet using her powers when need be—Corporal Kaylin Neya is relishing investigating a regular theft once again. That is, until she finds out the mysterious box was taken from Elani Street, where the mages and charlatans mingle and it’s sometimes difficult to tell the difference between the two. Still, she hopes this might be a mundane case….

Then in a back room Kaylin sees a lostlooking girl in a reflective pool…who calls out for Kaylin’s help. Shaken, Kaylin tries to stay focused on the case at hand. But since the stolen item is ancient, has no keyhole and holds tremendous darkness inside, Kaylin knows unknown forces are again playing with her destiny—and her life….

There's just something about this series...

Elantra is a fascinating world to me. I am always interested to learn about the races and the magic and the people and the things. But I just...I can't get really into the stories. To me, it always feels like a lot happens but nothing actually happens. Usually Kaylin whines about learning and then big bad magic comes along and suddenly she's the only one who can stop it but only if she learns these 12 suddenly very important things. It's formulaic and sure, that can work, but there's just...something

Kaylin both makes me laugh and want to smack her. Like I get the whole "no respect for authority" trait but there's limits. I love her sass and her strength and her drive to protect the children. But she can be such a brat sometimes. Like seriously? I again understand the whole thing about authority, and especially after her childhood but still. The authority figures in her life recognize that things weren't easy for her as a child and that she may not have had the same advantages but they're trying to help. I will acknowledge that when it comes down to it, she always pulls through especially when kids are concerned and usually in spectacular fashion, I might add.

I do admit to loving Severn. His silent strength and the fact that he's always watched over and protected Kaylin even when it was silently and from the shadows. That does lead to some sadness and that shared pain seems to scare her, but that's more of a Kaylin thing anyway.

I am getting frustrated with the lack of movement on the relationships here. I understand that not everything is a romance and it's definitely not needed to make a book good. But the fact that there's been this endless "will they, won't they" with the potential of a love triangle there just drives me nuts. Stating my opinion here: Kaylin and Severn. Nobody else. Nightshade can't be trusted; he's got his own agenda and something tells me it won't end well for Kaylin.

This is the longest it's taken me to read a book in a long time. I will still probably read the rest of the series because I'm intrigued about certain aspects, but I don't know how much of a hurry I'll be in...

The world building in this series is just so on point! It just gets better and better! In book three, Kaylin is asked to investigate a theft and a kidnapping. When it is brought to the attention of Lord Sanabalis, dragon tutor extraordinaire, he decides that Kaylin needs to engage in a series of research field trips. As Kaylin and Severn find themselves in the middle of a world ending prophecy, the biggest hurdle to keeping the city safe may be Kaylin's own fear. In a complex exploration of humanity's fear of discovery and racism, this novel would have a place in the current political climate of 2020 USA. It has some powerful lessons about forgiveness and hope for future generations that would also be apropos.

Wherein we learn more about the Tha'alani, the Tha'alaan, the shape of water, and the Keeper.

Kaylin really can't keep her nose out of other people's business. To be fair, she was actually asked to become involved, and it involves missing children, a missing reliquary, and a missing fugitive. Kaylin is learning, finally, and her inability to learn in the classroom is less important. I really like her as a wonderfully flawed heroine. She grows in realistic and relate-able ways, and it doesn't change who she is. That is very refreshing, when many of the books I've read that are similar focus on how the heroine changes over time as a person - Kaylin simply grows as a person.

I listened to this book because I knew it was something I could listen to when I needed to yet wouldn't be interested in enough to want to listen to it when I should be doing my homework. It didn't disappoint.

Michelle Sagara's The Chronicles of Elantra series is one of my favorites and this title did not disappoint, A few of the books in this series have not been as strong in my opinion but this is not one of those. The story was engaging and helped to move the plot along. I felt like I learned more about many of the characters including the protagonist in this volume. I highly recommend this book.

I really like each, episodic story, all the while exploring the world of Elantra and Kaylin.

One complaint. When are we going to see the romance that is just bubbling away under the surface?? I'm going to be sad if it never materialises.
