3.5 stars. This is solid police procedural. The protagonist putting his health and family at risk for a case is a bit of a cliche but nonetheless DI Ridpath is an intriguing character as were the other officers. I liked the feminist bent of some of them. I don’t like endings that are left so open for the next book as apparently this author has done with the first book.
I was give a copy from netgalley in exchange for an unbiased review.

I liked this book a lot. It is a very satisfying police thriller with lots of action and a likeable main character in Ridpath. The plot unfolds at a good pace and is complicated wnough to be interesting but not so convoluted that you get lost. Recommended.

I didn’t know how much I missed Ridpath cases till I started reading his new case! This book was my perfect antidote for my jet lag, I couldn’t sleep at all the night I read this book, but I had good company all night! 😉
This will be a really personal case for the DI Ridpath, when a few suicides are committed and no one sees any connection between them, DI Ridpath will have to investigate alone to search for a relation between the victims and a possible motive for their deaths, be prepared for mobs, vengeance and a difficult case that will make a race against the clock for the police if they want to stop their worst nightmare, a gang war.
This is a police procedural book, a deep view of how the detectives and the coroner work on a case; their investigation, the autopsy and the interrogation, but most important of all, the human side of each case, the friendship, collaboration and respect between detectives. Of course sometimes you can feel rivalry or even dislike, we are all humans, are we?
I don’t want to talk much about the case, I don’t want to slip any spoiler, it’s interesting and intriguing, and it has a little twist, so be prepared!
I don’t know if you know DI Ridpath but he is recovering from cancer, having still to go each month to his appointments at the hospital to check that he is still in remission, and I think that’s why I connected so much with him. How he explains the solitude you feel waiting at the doctor waiting room to know if you are still in remission or you need treatment, that’s one of my last memories with my mother; the fear, the cold sweat, the time going slowly… He is still recovering but this doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have to take care of his health, of course you can guess that is not doing it… and his problems with his wife and daughter are getting much worse lately… we’ll see how it ends.
This is an amazing read; the case, the characters and the story per se, nail bitting and unstoppable, DI Ridpath will be your favourite detective from now on!

A naked man runs across the M60 and is mown down by a lorry, he must be off his head on drugs or is he? One witness is DI Ridpath and he thinks he saw the man being chased by a gunman. Attached to the coroner's department Ridpath comes across the case of another man accidentally drowned but there is a strange link to the motorway case, both men were naked except for their blue boxer shorts. Also the drowning victim is the image of the gunman but he died a week earlier. As all the deaths are linked to two prominent Manchester crime families, the police are aware that any false move could result in all out gang warfare.
This is the second outing for DI Ridpath in the series but a welcome new book from Lee. The experience of Lee's writing shines through with complex but not unbelievable characters, and a satisfyingly twisty plot which is also not so farfetched.

Where the Dead Fall by M J Lee has DI Ridpath see a motorway accident, where a nearly naked man is hit by a lorry whilst running from a man with a gun.
This starts an investigation where DI Ridpath has to prove he wasn't going crazy when claiming to see the man with the gun. This is a police procedural, and a thriller, with Ridpath having an estraged wife and daughter, whom he's trying to repair his relationship with, during all of this chaos.
This is the second book in the DI Ridpath series, and I hadn't read the first one. I found it to be a fine police procedural, but I'm not hunting down the rest of the books in the series.
Where the Dead Fall was published on 11 April 2019, and is available from Amazon , Waterstones and Bookshop.org .

I was given this book in exchange for an unbiased review, so my thanks to NetGalley and to Canelo .

Spoilers ahead.
I enjoyed book 1 so I ordered book 2. I enjoyed both books despite them having 2 of my pet peeves:
1) Alternating POVs. I do not like reading from the criminal's POV because it kills the suspense. There have been times when I've completely skipped the criminal POV chapters.
2) Protagonist's personal issues. I'm here to read a crime book and most of the time, personal issues just take time away from the crime. I understand that it's to create a well rounded and real protagonist it's not really necessary to have it for a good crime book.
A brother and sister duo torture and kill several young men. Who are they and why? We know the bodies are related because we see the crims killing them. It would have been better off if the investigation led to that. Anyway, forensics link the bodies and Ridpath finds the killer(s) by following up on the clues he finds.
Overall I enjoy the book(s) because I like the characters and the writing is easy to read and follow. I'm now on the 3rd book.
