Going back to my revisit, Zero Year was my favorite arc back when it first hit shelves, so it'll be interesting to see how I feel about it years after this run has wrapped up. There was certainly concerns going into it, as it'd be immediately compared to Year One, but Snyder's take on the origin is wholly its own and knows what iconography to pull and what to change with the times.

I like Scott Snyder's stories and the art was quite good too. The New 52 hasn't been too exciting for me, but this was actually quite interesting origin story for Batman (and it was kind of cute to see Bruce fighting the bad guys without all the Batman stuff). I just wish there was more Riddler and less Red Hood in this comic.

I didn't read the first 3 volumes but that didn't impact my enjoyment of this one. Nice introduction of Bruce Wayne before he becomes Batman. The Red Hood is a solid villain and the introduction of the Riddler was well handled. Recommended.

It's hard to deny that Scott Snyder's Batman may be the best we've seen in comics. Excellent origin story.

This was okay I guess. I never cared much for the whole pre-Joker Red Hood thing, but pre-Batman Bruce is free real estate.

So you're telling me I have to slough through yet another retelling of Thomas and Martha Wayne getting gunned down outside of a theater? The pearls? The gunshots? The screaming child? That's pretty much how I felt when I heard that Vol. 4 was going to be another origin story.
However, I was quickly sucked into this retelling of the old myth. Zero Year is in homage of Frank Miller's "Year One" while at the same time standing in contrast to it. Zero Year is the story of Bruce Wayne, not Batman . . . and it's a great thing. We see young Bruce's training in various crime ring and secret societies throughout the world (similar to Batman Begins). We see Bruce struggle with his parents' death and his own identity as dons the cowl. Just as in Year One, we see Batman take on the "Proto-Joker" and the Red Hood Gang. We also meet a new (and interesting!) villainess named the Anchoress.
The New 52 continues to impress. This is an essential read for Batman fans.
