So they decided to redo Batman's origin once again. While Year One will forever hold the place of best in my opinion, this is very well done, no doubt about it. I especially enjoyed the little singles of him learning a particular lesson, or proving the point that he's sticking to his ways. It was really nice, and it'll make all the rest of the stories flow together better than they have previously.

Wild, badass, almost post-apocalyptic Batman origin story that's more vibrant and adventurous than others I've experienced. Capullo's artwork as always is astounding and Snyder's writing, though occasionally maybe a bit over-verbose this time around, is fantastic. Any small gripes I had with the pacing are rectified by the addition of the last two comics - Snippets of Bruce Wayne's international studies as a young adult. Super cool. Definitely to-be-reread someday.

A reinvention of Batman's origins, heavily reminiscent (but not identical) to Frank Miller's.

What surprised me the most here is the inversion of Batman's role: he appears at a time of crisis when the Bat-villain would exist with or without him, and the results are... still debatable, but it's Batman, you know?

As far as origin stories go, this one is one of the most entertaining ones I've come across. Leave your reserves for another moment, the story works fine for what it's trying to be.

If asked I would've said I don't particularly need another take on the Batman origin story. However, this origin retelling was thoroughly engaging with high quality in both the writing and the art. Unlike some comics where you feel as though you're wasting your entertainment budget because it takes about 5 minutes to read, this book invites you in for a longish and well-developed visit in the world of Gotham. This had the ideal balance of dialogue and art. And all the dialogue was used in the service of character and plot development.
