Book recommendation by my nephew ✨
Shakti’s learned to accept herself and overcome her inner fears. She saw through the darkness/anger she held inside to help herself, family, and the rest of the town.
Also, loved that it has both POC and queer characters 🌈

The book was fun; the art was vivid and colorful, the magic and mythos of Durga was super interesting, the character development of Shakti and her relationship with Kali was very cute and wholesome..but I can’t get over the fact that she told her moms about her bullying and the magic the bullies were performing and her mom’s reaction was pretty much to do nothing.
“Oh no! My child is being bullied! Idk maybe my book has something? Sucks that this is affecting your grades oopsies but I have more important stuff to do” The disconnect between that plot point just opened too large of a plot hole for me to fully enjoy the book.

Okay this was AWESOME. Witchy, wholesome, queer, found family, good hearts triumph over bullies, two-mom family, best friend magical bonding, etc etc. Super cool art and ADORED the South Asian folklore throughout the book. Shakti's moms are the coolest, how can I get adopted??

Shakti is a middle grades graphic novel about a twelve year old Indian American girl who must face the challenges of moving to a new school and learning to control the magic she has inherited from one of her moms.
On her first day at her new school, Shakti makes friends with Xi. And soon she finds a few girls to avoid, the dreaded mean girls who are dubbed HEK for their first initials. HEK has the school under it's thumb and maybe it's spell? Even the teachers let HEK get away with anything they want.
Told with several vignettes of Durga Ma and Kali Ma, this book is full of beautiful art and Indian traditions. The ever helpful Durga Ma cannot be summoned for magic with any malice in your heart or her reverse, the evil Kali Ma will appear. This book is both written and illustrated by Tamil folks and I learned so much, and I love how the story they crafted brought awareness to and drew meaning from Indian beliefs.
This is top notch literature. I can't wait to read this with my son when he's a little older.
