Oh, Dickens... exposing so many social justice issues while perpetuating the "angel in the house!" Of course, Dickens has wonderful prose, and nobody can touch him for creating atmosphere and memorable characters. I do often wonder if the characters slide over into caricature too often. Anyway, this is one of the "industrial" novels; it takes place in the fictional Coketown, a manufacturing city. One of the predominant (may I say heavy-handed?) themes is the conflict between Fact and Fancy; and their roles in educating children. Sentimental and overdone as Dickens usually is. Sometimes I wonder why I read Dickens, as I think it's clear that I have conflicting opinions and feelings about his books. Still, the prose is wonderful and the atmosphere is too, and you can always count on Dickens for those two things.

A bit different for Dickens - shorter (by his standards) and laugh out loud funny at times. There is still plenty of injustice, cruelty, and moral yearning as we expect in Dickens, but this has a far more satirical edge.

O autor de “Oliver Twist”, uma das minhas obras preferidas , nem desilude! Adorei ler esta obra e a cada página saboreava as suas palavras, deleitava-me com a sua escrita e , certamente , não deixei de reconhecer a genialidade de Dickens e de ver paralelismos com a nossa sociedade .

A história passa-se na fictícia Coketown , uma cidade industrializada , suja e coberta de tijolos e onde vivem classes distintas. Os supremos ricos beneficiam de educação que , não obstante , põe de lado a imaginação , apenas se cingindo “aos factos e apenas factos.” Os pobres, iletrados , vivem em bairros miseráveis e trabalham horas incontáveis em fábricas, mal se sustentando.

Este cenário serve de palco de fundo à história da família Gradgrind, cujos jovens , Louisa e Tom, sofreram os efeitos negativos da educação que o pai lhes deu. Sendo cingidos a apenas serem racionais e frívolos , a sua maneira de encarar as coisas submete-os a ciclos viciosos de infelicidade e miséria , apesar de todos os privilégios próprios da sua condição .

Paralelamente, apresentam-se-nos outros infelizes que vivem na corda bamba da sociedade mas que , apesar disso, sabem reconhecer o afeto e a espontaneidade nos pequenos gestos.

Dickens foi dos primeiros autores a retratar a fealdade sociedade inglesa do seu tempo e provavelmente o pioneiro a retratar o pobre como herói na literatura. Daí , consegue ser extremamente crítico , e a criar empatia pelos menos afortunados. Em “Tempos Difíceis” ,o romance mais curto de Dickens ,existem páginas que merecem ser relidas e que tem uma certa áurea , parece que um pressentimento dentro de nós . Eu senti-me assim muitas vezes.

Obviamente que irei aumentar a lista de leitura de Dickens , porque é um dos meus autores preferidos ❤️

Shorter than some of his others but probably took longer to read. There's not as much good news or lightness of spirit in this book but still skilfully written.
Dickens delivers another winner in this book, which is uncharacteristically concise. At fewer than 300 pages, this book is downright short, by Dickens' standards.
With a title like Hard Times, and with my familiarity of Dickens' other literature (I would never accuse Mr. Dickens of his levity throughout his fictions, I had apprehensions about the dark shenanigans that would be going down in this book. While my favorite book of Dickens' remains Bleak House, this was another delight-delightful with a feeling of dread.
Dickens is as masterful as ever with this book, the characters so well intertwined and the setting so vividly illustrated, that this is difficult to put down. While I would have preferred the usual, verbose Dickens-with the rich detail, and the fuller context of characters' backstories; this was still fantastic, well-written and entertaining.
I recommend this book to all fans of Dickens, the English language or great literature in general. You can't consider yourself well-read until you've familiar with the breadth of Charles Dickens' literature. I'm only sad that the list of books by Dickens that I HAVEN'T read is quickly dwindling.
