Love this series. This book had an intricate plot and I enjoyed the hell out of finding out more about Jenny's backstory.

I also liked the inclusion of the trans character BUT her character seemed to be only included so that jackaby could white knight for her and they could have saucy banter. She doesn't come back into the story in a meaningful way and I would just like to avoid stories where sexuality and gender identity are used as the main focus for the character. I'm sure she shows up again in the next book but I was hoping for a lot more there.

Otherwise I enjoyed the world and I'm very excited to read the last book in this series finally.

I just find these books so charming, and I definitely recommend the audiobooks.

Ghostly Echoes is a tribute to loyal friendships. Reading it is like coming home after working a double shift. It's the coffee and plate of steaming pancakes awaiting you. It's the soft couch that you curl up on as you devour its pages.

Still laughed out loud in a few moments, but the reader can tell this storyline is headed somewhere more serious in this installment.

Diving deeper into Jenny’s history + starting to connect the pieces, with wheels that have been turning since #1.

Understated notes of political/ethical vibes, too. LGBTQ, illegal aliens, mental health, Native Americans, and the historical treatment of all of the above. (As well as subtle jabs at modern handling.)

Interesting addition to the madness that is Jackaby. Curious to see how it all ties up in The Dire King.

While I enjoyed the deep dive into Jenny's backstory in Ghostly Echoes, there was a lot of this book that was just kind of a hot mess. The last third had me staring at my Kindle going, "what just happened?" The action scenes were sadly vague and not nearly clear enough to follow properly. This book has a lot going for it -- Jenny is a fantastic character and learning more about her and what happened in her past was absolutely worth the read, but the end was just...not good. Confusing at best, flat out impossible to follow at worst.

The stakes rose a lot in this book, and I'm not sure that really works for the world set up in these novels. I'll absolutely still read the next one, but I'm going into it not expecting a whole lot, which is sad. I really enjoyed the first two, but this one was a big step down.
