"My brick, My house, My whole world." Book three of the Jackaby series feels like a finely woven culmination of its predecessors - characters become flesh and bone - most especially the ghostly Jenny Cavanaugh (whom I adored); the world building goes deeper and the big bad begins to really haunt the narrative. Jenny definitely surpassed Abigail in my BFF estimation.

*reads book* *immediately looks for book 4* *sees there is no book 4 yet* *weeps.* I need book 4 now.

"It is not for doctors to tell us who we are."

I devoured this book. Ghostly Echoes is my favorite book in the Jackaby series so far!

Just like in Beastly Bones, Ghostly Echoes picks up where the story left off. When I read a series, I want to experience everything. Some series conclude one book and continue the next a few months or so in the future. Having the preceding books pick up shortly after is one of the most appealing things that I find in books. If I'm going to sit through a series, especially one that I am really passionate about, I don't want to miss a single page of the character's adventure. Ritter's books are exactly what I'm looking for in a series.

There was never a dull moment in Ghostly Echoes. My mind was constantly trying to reach ahead, suspecting one character after another. I was one hundred pages in when I realized that so much had already happened and I wasn't even halfway through.

I love the mix in mythology and unique explanation of each simply existing all at once. The analogies and fables not only were eye opening but creative. I especially like the story of the three blind men and an elephant. The answer was simple but it has stuck with me ever since.

I cannot wait to read what happens next in the Dire King. Judging from the ending in Ghostly Echoes, it will be far from boring or disappointing.

And now, the long wait for the last book in the series to become available from the library. #storyofmylife

AHHHHHH! I'm so furious at myself for not picking up the final book yet! Pay day seems so far away now!

I love all of these characters! The dialogue and sarcasm are things that I would literally say. I found that the groups hierarchical structure faded away a lot in this one and put them all on equal ground--they all had something to contribute and surprised each other.

I definitely thought Mrs. Hoole was the villain so the ending really took me by surprise. Ritter incorporated a lot of comments on society at this time period like having a child out of wedlock. Some issues re one's we still deal with right now such as the drag queen. something she said really stook with me and it definitely transcends their time period:

"You're a sweet girl but open those pretty eyes. For me, they are all the wrong streets. I don't want to be careful Miss Abigail, I want to be Lydia Lee."

It pretty much broke my heart.

Abigail has grown up so much from the first book! She's strong and vocal and independent and loyal and honest. Her going to the underworld was so freaking cool! Her relationship with Jenny was also #relationshipgoals.

Jackaby is still such a mystery to me but I get the feeling everything will pour out in the 4th book and we started to see that more and more as this book went on.

hella excited for the sequel!

These books are getting better and better. Ghostly Echoes was my favorite Jackaby novel yet.

I don't know how to feel about this third installment of the Jackaby series, except to say that I wasn't excited by it and felt like I pushed myself to finish. On one hand I really enjoyed the parts with Charon in the underworld and Abigail's growing relationship with Charlie. On the other, however, I didn't like at all how preachy some aspects of the book were. It was so out of place and all the more obvious that Ritter was trying to make a specific political point when it didn't lend anything to the store in the first place. The newer characters didn't feel fleshed out at all; they honestly felt like fillers, which isn't how you want important characters to feel. Finally, the cliffhanger ending really makes me mad and I generally don't like authors who use it. It's often a ploy to sell more books. With a cliffhanger and an engaged reader, you're guaranteed to sell books with the next installment because they want to know what happens. It's manipulative. I understand a series will have multiple books. I would like to read them all because I enjoy the story and writing, not because of a cliffhanger ending. I'm not sure I'll read the next book in the series.
adventurous funny mysterious fast-paced

A tad too fluffy for my liking. There also ought to be more grey persons involved because, though I like the cast of main characters, there's too much of a clear cut between good vs. evil. Honestly, that leaves me a bit suspicious because no gang of heroes can be that pure-hearted. So, let's hope the final book gives us some questionably ethical decision making/considering.

Another hope for the final book is that solutions won't come about as easily as they did here. I should like to be more on the edge of my seat and semi-panicked that everything may not end well.

And one last note: I'm not finding the romance between Abigail and Charlie necessary. Can't say it's adding much to the story for me; if anything, it almost detracts from what's at stake.

Love this series!

The action is really ramping up in this novel. We finally get some answers to what happened to Jenny and a little bit of closure on that case…though it ends up leading into an even bigger over-arching mystery. This new mystery is really interesting and brings in all sorts of new characters and creatures! We even get a little peak at the Annwyn, along with a wonderful mixture of afterlife mythology.

There was a lot of character building in this novel. We’re given a lot more backstory not only for Jenny, but also for Jackaby, both of which look like they will be integral to the overall storyline. (Spoiler?) I’m happy Jenny gets some closure, but that she will still be in the books; I love her character.

I don’t want to give too much away, so I won’t go into too much detail, but the ultimate foes sound wonderfully evil and it looks like the final showdown will be utilize an impressive mixture of science and magic. I can’t wait for the next installment!
