Abigail Rook and R. F. Jackaby are back! They’re working on a cold case and this time, it’s personal: it’s about their mutual friend and ghost of their house: Jenny.
And while they discover a whole new aspect of a case that isn’t so cold after all, only them can bring it to full closure, as always.
I was lucky enough to get an ARC for this book, which I’m very excited and thankful for! I absolutely love this series, so getting access to the sequel in advance was the best surprise I could get.
As I said, I love this series. And this third book did not disappoint - it feels good to be back into this world! The characters are still highly loveable and quirky, and their interactions are extremely well written.
There is action, loads of mystery, subplots, folklore, fantasy, magic and ghosts... There’s no way you can get bored while reading this story! It’s so well crafted that you’ll feel entertained from beginning to end - I couldn’t put it down! There are so many layers to this story that I just know I’m going to forget mentioning half of it... sorry about that! But it’s gloomy at times, super funny, sad, happy, mysterious... I just love it!
I don’t want to say too much of the plot, since it’s book #3, but let’s just say that we keep digging into the character’s past, and their development is really well written - it’s subtle, but present.
Also, I love the atmosphere. Ritter’s writing is, as always, so good at plunging the reader into this fascinating world.
What I especially liked in this book is how far it takes you, plot-wise, and I never managed to get ahead of the game and guess right to solve the mystery ahead of the characters. And this is the sign of carefully written story, and I love that very much.
So, in case that wasn’t clear enough: I LOVED IT!
Side note: I know I freaked out already when it was released, but isn‘t that cover absolutely stunning?

I received this book as an ARC from Goodreads. I read Jackaby and Beastly Bones last December and thought they were delightful. I think the tone of them feels very similar to Gail Carriger's Finishing School series, quite silly, but with action. These stories follow Abigail Rook, an 19th Century English girl who ran away from home and has landed in New England where she takes up employment with R.F. Jackaby, who is a private investigator because he can see all the folkloric creatures around. He is great character.
This story has us *finally* following the story of the murder of Jackaby's ghostly landlady Jenny Cavenaugh. I really like Jenny as a character. She is the female friend for narrator Abigail Rook, and straight man to Jackaby's capers. In this book, Jenny is yelling at Jackaby for smashing holes in her walls; for some reason I love that she is a ghost and the straight man at the same time. I need to re-read the previous books to catch all the threads between them, but Abigail finally has some of the predictions about her future come true. And we get a little bit more of sweet Charlie Barker. Please, Mr. Ritter, when can we have the next one??????

Warnings: transphobia
While the first two books had two seemingly disparate cases, Ghostly Echoes brings them together in a connected storyline, with a Big Bad arising, and going into the backstories of Jenny and Jackaby. The book starts with them investigating Jenny's murder, and Abigail volunteering for possession to help delve into Jenny's locked memories, but soon they also have a similar murder in the present, unraveling a conspiracy that involves the whole town and part of the supernatural world. It combines steampunk and the supernatural in a cohesive plot that has big stakes, but also comes down to get at the core of the main characters, developing on their relationships, giving them personal stakes to work into this.
Ghostly Echoes has a more dangerous feel to it than the previous two installments, and that is partially because the danger has come to them, and even though it seems like a missing persons case combined with a murder, it soon becomes evident that they were also targets. Abigail shows fortitude beyond anything before, Jackaby shows a vulnerable side, but Jenny's was the most significant development in terms of character. She evolves from being a secondary character, a confidant and friend to Abigail, to being one of the main players of the story, even if she herself isn't completely a part of the investigative agency. Charlie's and Abigail's romance is progressing at a slow but comfortable (for a dark mystery like this one) pace. Jackaby's backstory gave more depth to his profession, as well as the powers of a Seer. Finally, Abigail's journey into the other side widened the known world of the Jackaby series.
All in all, this was an amazing sequel with attention given to almost every aspect of the story, from plot to characters, to world-building. I was wowed!

This was probably my favorite Jackaby book so far. I didn't know how book #3 was going to top #2's dragon but it did! Apparently taking a trip to the underworld more-or-less will do that! It was pretty sweet and very interesting in my humble opinion. The book was also full of little pearls of wisdom, as well as pieces of mythology and legend, AND finally some Jenny badassery!! So yeah, definitely some fun mixed in with the building mystery. I'm glad that all of the books' mysteries tie together and I'm looking forward to the final installment.
This is the sort of book that is just compulsively readable - the characters are fun and progress each book in a variety of ways, and the story line just gets better as it begins to head towards the eventual end. This series is one that I reach for when I just want brain candy - something enjoyable that keeps me turning the pages.
I didn't wholly understand everything that happened. I still love the mythologies woven into the story and how Jackaby introduces me to new ones. I really love the lessons incorporated in the sidelines to the plot.
My favorite of the Jackaby series. This one has even more heart and light than the previous two, which I didn't think possible.
Definitely one of my favourites from the series! We learn more about Jackaby's past as well as Jenny's past. I'm definitely hoping that there's a next book because it does end in a bit of a cliffhanger plot-wise but narratively speaking, it does end in a fulfilling way.

Ghostly Echoes delves further into Jenny Cavanaugh’s murder when Jenny requests Jackaby and Abigail’s help. The case is a decade old – it’s cold. But when a recent case is eerily similar, Jackaby and Abigail realise that the case isn’t as cold as they originally thought. New evidence comes to light, secrets are uncovered, and Jenny’s murderer is more dangerous than any of them realised – and the case itself is much bigger than Jenny.
Ghostly Echoes is the penultimate book in the highly fun, engaging, and humorous Jackaby series. However, Ghostly Echoes, because it delves into Jenny’s murder, does take a more darker and series tone, but I was impressed that it also kept some of its light and fun aspects. I liked how the story came together – I liked how William Ritter weaved the story and how events, people, and clues that we saw throughout Jackaby and Beasty Bones came together or made a reappearance.
The world building is great and I think it’s really unique and just plain fun. I like that the world building isn’t treated too seriously – it’s humorous and interesting. I’ll always recommend this series to people looking for a fun and light paranormal read.
I liked that we got to see more of a backstory to both Jenny and Jackaby. I did feel like they were more fleshed out and developed than in previous books, so that was a positive. BUT, I do wish we got more development with Abigail, especially considering she is the protagonist, and I felt like she was sort of… put to the side a little bit in Ghostly Echoes.
Overall, an enjoyable read and I look forward to reading the next one. A great addition to the series, and anyone looking for something a little bit different in the paranormal genre should definitely pick this series up. And if all that doesn't persuade you to give this series a go - just look at those covers, wouldn't they look beautiful on your shelf?
