I've read the entire series and am looking forward to the 4th one. I love the quirky characters: a fiercely independent young lady who always seems to land on her feet and her employer who seems slightly crazy but is endearing at the same time. There's a good mystery with just enough fantasy to feel like a dog cocking it's head. Although the last book was a little too unbelievable, it will be interest to see how the author wraps it up.
This has gone south so fast. Jackaby was easily a 5-star book with a couple of flaws, but nothing bad enough to dock any real points. Beastly Bones was a marked decrease in quality, but it had its moments. This, though? This is just lazy, boring, soulless. Where did the fun and adventure from that first book go? What happened?
I really don't have much to say here, I'm honestly just baffled at how boring this book was. I guess I'll read The Dire King, mostly because I don't have much else on hand to listen to, and hope that Ritter was able to recapture the magic for his final installment...but I won't hold my breath.

This series continues to be a favorite. Like Lockwood and Co. but for an older audience, there's enough mystery to keep fans of that genre hooked, but Ritter's world-building and characterization are rich enough to satisfy fans of sci-fi/fantasy. Very excited to see where we're going next, though I'll be sad to see the series end.

Really liked it. Really fast paced, some great imaginative snippets, a bit of solid character development. At times it was almost too fast, I found myself plowing through fast enough to miss things and have to reread bits, and it careened along to a not quite cliffhanger but not entirely satisfying ending. I loved the book but the abrupt ending left me slightly grumpy with a book hangover! It's a tough balance to have a good hook for the next title while finishing the book at hand.
