Really loved this one. Emma Scott hasn’t disappointed me yet!
Wow! Such a beautiful love story. I love these "cheating under duress" stories. I can't seem to get enough. I love the "right person/wrong time" trope. I was so confused about why there was still so much story after the bank robbery. I looked down and there was over 50% more of the book left. I knew there would be tons of tension, angst, and drama. But that is how I think it would really happen in real life. It is not easy to throw away a life that was built over years. I got so frustrated with Alex, but I could understand her reasonings. Cory was such a good hero (literally and as the lead male character!). I just really enjoyed the book and will be looking at the other stories from this new to me author!

It pains me to rate this book so low, because I really love Emma Scott. Rush and Forever Right Now, and even In Harmony, I really enjoyed but I just didn't care for this one. Still, this won't be my last book by her!

Unique and Beautiful story
I am a huge fan of Emma Scott, and somehow this story slipped through my knowledge for years. A unique story that started intense and thrilling, but ended incredibly sweet and perfect. I could not put this book down, as it was fast paced in the beginning, and then i had to know how the relationship developed outside the first situation. Totally worth the lack of sleep though

I thought this was an interesting well written read. But both the hero and the heroine did enough bonehead things to aggravate me so that I could not really love love it.
The beginning and meet up was quite interesting. Alex is a super shark lady lawyer who is wealthy and about to be married to her fiance of six years. Cory is a contractor who is broke and trying to keep his ex-gf from taking their daughter away to live in Alaska.
The two meet in a bank as they are standing in line. But the bank gets robbed and they are held hostage for several days. The robbers turn increasingly desperate and violent as the stand-off between them and the police progress. One robber takes a personal dislike to Cory so even though the bank was full of people, Cory is singled out for specific jeopardy.
During the long hours ordeal as they talk during their enforced proximity they become very hyper-focused on each other. And as the stand off crescendos toward violence, they become hyper-protective of each other.
Once it is over it is back to the real world, hers a high-powered, pressure-filled somewhat superficial one where she is planning her wedding. His no less pressure filled because he has lost his home, his workplace situation is bad and he is battling for his daughter. But they can't stay away from each other.
I thought the romance between these two was quite well done. It was angsty and the connection was very well done.
Fair warning this book does contain adultery as the heroine cheats on her fiance with the hero. I will say on the one hand, I could see why Alex'd be so tempted, it wasn't just a matter of 'this guy is hot and saved my life' but rather there were real textual reasons why Alex and Drew's (the fiance) relationship was not healthy for either of them. But on the other hand, Alex easily could have broken off with Drew for reasons that had nothing to do with Cory. I will also say I liked that the book didn't make Drew a villain to give us the readers an easy out for forgiving Alex for her adultery, but also does not let him completely off the hook either. It was a nice bit of character development for a character who is traditionally in a hapless role in a romance novel.
For his part, I thought the book went way overboard with Cory's pride. Alex came through for him in a big way (a couple of my favorite scenes). Sure I get that he saw the class divide between him and Alex as something that would chafe. But his actions went beyond that in places where he came off as needlessly obstreperous rather than proud.
Another thing I liked was how Alex's BFF was NOT on board at all with her cheating. I expected the romance novel staple of the bff being supportive no matter what, but nope, Lilah, was pissed. Even though she knew the state of Alex's relationship with Drew she definitely called Alex on her shit and held her feet to the fire. I loved this development.
The ending was great and I loved the resolution of how Drew and Alex's relationship ended up, but I thought it felt like something that should have-could have happened earlier but was drawn out for the added conflict.

Like her other book, the duet Bringing down the Stars, ES writes great characters... well, lets say she writes great leads but sadly neglects the really pivotal characters; they don't have enough character, depth, history, etc to drive the plot forward believably. In this case Drew (in BDTS, it was Connor and his parents). Alex's reasons for waffling between 2 men seemed inadequate because the reader was given very little to convince us to feel how close Alex and Drew were. We were told they were close but ES emphasizes all the reasons why any sane woman wold have dumped his butt long long ago (and her "I never give up, etc kind of attitude" was not a good enough reason for sticking it out all those years). Interestingly, Alex's mother who play a strong voice int he book is better drawn than Drew. Even though I got very annoyed at times with the book, I finished it to see the HEA for Alex and Cory ;-) Cory was a sweetheart. So was Alex once she started to wake up.
Well..this was not my book. I barely finished it, mostly skipped through the last 35%. I just couldn't relate to the main heroine and her choices. Maybe they were right, maybe they were wrong. I just didn't agree with what she did, but for some reason I kept reading.
