I automatically reserved the sequel, that's how good this book is. If you want sci-fi, evil cults, magic...all amidst the struggles of Jim Crow America, this book is for you. I gained a deeper understanding of how Black folks struggled (and still struggle) for the right to be treated as humans. Further, this book is phenomenal representation of the Black community in sci-fi work. Loved it, one of my all time favorites.

To sum up: wowwwwww.

To elaborate a smidge: I really enjoyed the heck out of this book. I was reticent to read it at first because it was described to me as an interconnected anthology rather than one long traditional story. And yeah, that’s true but if anything it makes it even better than I would have thought. A couple of the stories started off wonky to me but they smoothed out and I enjoyed every one.

My ONLY quibble is there weren’t nearly enough tentacles squirming around for a book with Lovecraft in the title BUT that’s ok!

It took me a while to get into this book, due to the creepy horror factor in the beginning and not really being able to read it at night without having funky dreams. But then it got slightly less Lovecraftian and I really enjoyed it.
