At the beginning of the book I’m like I kinda don’t like Hilo...

As the book went on... I definitely don’t like Hilo...

By the end of the book omg I really hate this man Hilo is the absolute worst...

The book is good their whole world is interesting but seriously I do not like Hilo. He is the most unlikable character like even more so than what I guess you would call the villains of this book. He’s very self centered because everything everybody does must be about him. Shae leaving and starting her own life? Yup that has to be about him it couldn’t possibly be for any other reason so hold a grudge against your sister. Then at the end with Anden... try to understand where he’s coming from? Take a moment to realize that some people have other paths in life? Nope it’s totally about him not this kid’s fears. Ugh I really don’t like Hilo. Will I ever like him? Don’t know cause I have 2 more books to go and I’m very invested in the story but I really despise this man. If it ends in something horrible happening to him... oh well it was likely deserved.

But really my complaint aside I really did like this book and I’m interested in seeing what happens next.

Jade City earns a solid 4.5 from me. The story plot, world-building, and magic system are all excellent, each receiving a 5. However, the literary craftsmanship, which contributes to the ease of reading, falls short for me. It often felt choppy, as if there were potential editing cuts that left the flow lacking.

Despite this, I eagerly anticipate continuing the trilogy and immersing myself further in this captivating world and with these memorable characters.

had to go back to the library

A poignant story about the consequences of societal, personal, and familial expectations. Fonda does a remarkable job of making characters that are likable, flawed, but always worth rooting for.

In retrospect some of the plot twists could be considered well worn tropes of the genre, but they felt believable and true given the world Lee creates.

While most of the characters come from a position of “power” both magically and from a socioeconomic stand point Lee gives space to show how “normal” people are affected by the protagonists actions.

I also really appreciate that one of the main antagonists was a woman that was not portrayed as “pure evil.” Lee gives perspective that made it easy to sympathize if not outright admire the actor who is supposed to be the “villain.”

Wonderful from start to finish.

Wasn’t sure that I’d enjoy this one but I’m so happy I gave it a chance! It started off slow but that’s because there so much to understand about the world and by the time I got into it I could clearly imagine every scene and really felt for the characters. Also wasn’t too predictable but it didn’t feel unexpected just to trick the reader. Great read

This book had me so gripped in the second part and in a tornado of emotions (mostly worry) that I couldn't put it down. When I first started it I was really not in the mood for this type of book but damn, it got to me. I can't wait to get back into this universe, but after all of that I need a break to even just gather my thoughts on everything that went down and take a deep, long breath.
