had to go back to the library

A poignant story about the consequences of societal, personal, and familial expectations. Fonda does a remarkable job of making characters that are likable, flawed, but always worth rooting for.

In retrospect some of the plot twists could be considered well worn tropes of the genre, but they felt believable and true given the world Lee creates.

While most of the characters come from a position of “power” both magically and from a socioeconomic stand point Lee gives space to show how “normal” people are affected by the protagonists actions.

I also really appreciate that one of the main antagonists was a woman that was not portrayed as “pure evil.” Lee gives perspective that made it easy to sympathize if not outright admire the actor who is supposed to be the “villain.”

Wonderful from start to finish.

Wasn’t sure that I’d enjoy this one but I’m so happy I gave it a chance! It started off slow but that’s because there so much to understand about the world and by the time I got into it I could clearly imagine every scene and really felt for the characters. Also wasn’t too predictable but it didn’t feel unexpected just to trick the reader. Great read

This book had me so gripped in the second part and in a tornado of emotions (mostly worry) that I couldn't put it down. When I first started it I was really not in the mood for this type of book but damn, it got to me. I can't wait to get back into this universe, but after all of that I need a break to even just gather my thoughts on everything that went down and take a deep, long breath.

Slow start, but afterwards the story is great !
Complex characters and storyline that feel clos to the heart
dark tense

I can definitely see why people like this book. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case for me.
The family dynamics were interesting but I didn't really care about the characters, especially the male ones. Most of them were very off-putting and problematic. The only exception is Shae - I really liked her and would love to see more of her perspective in the events of the book.

Something new I found out about myself is I don't really enjoy the mafia-style conflict because both sides are awful and people will be harmed no matter what happens and no matter who wins so even if the plot is quite compelling it's hard to care about the final outcome.

very good. tho honestly i would probably have enjoyed this a lot more if i weren’t so busy with the IB and had read it faster. Also, very similar to the godfather, which I love.
