This book was really hyped up for me. I really enjoyed it and I see why others love it. It’s a little too gang violence focused for my taste. I enjoyed Shae snd Andan’s stories lines though. Will continue. Just not sure where the series goes now.

Jade City is a razor-sharp blend of gangster saga and martial-arts fantasy that hooked me from the start with its brilliant premise: jade as both sacred inheritance and dangerous drug. Fonda Lee builds a world that feels gritty and lived-in, full of smoky teahouses, back-alley duels, and power struggles that test loyalty at every turn. The Kaul family’s bonds and betrayals give the story real emotional weight, while the larger conflict over jade shows how tradition buckles under modern greed. It’s a novel that balances stylish action with layered political intrigue, and by the end, I was already itching to dive into the rest of the trilogy.

If I’m being honest, this was not what I was expecting…
I was anticipating a Peaky Blinders esc drama with more elements of fantasy/magic whereas this is more driven by family and clan drama surrounding a trade war & the duties/honors of being a member of a clan.
I’m intrigued with any Asian inspired pieces and cultures, so I might be bias-
The story telling was absolutely beautiful. I really felt immersed in this world, whether it would be something as simple as a conversation in a house or a high stakes event.
I will be continuing the series and have a feeling the books will just get better and better teehee
