The Elephant Whisperer by Lawerence Anthony with Graham Spence
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

This book was extremely slow to start off with to the point I nearly gave up, happy to say I’m glad I stuck with it as it did get better.

This book tells the story of Lawrence and Graham opening up a reserve in Africa called Thula Thula and taking on a herd of disruptive elephants.

It tells the story of how a bond between human and Elephant can be formed but can also go wrong.

This book is NOT for the faint hearted - it has times of death in one form or another but mostly times of survival and happiness.

As someone who has worked in conservation and with wild animals before, this book was just strikingly beautiful and impactful and I loved every second of Lawrence's story with the herd and his reserve Thula Thula.

If you've ever want to be a warden on an African reserve (or are passionate about conservation and/or elephants, this is the book for you! Uplifting, heartbreaking, intense, and sweet. Sometimes all on one page. Wonderful book!

When South African conservationist Lawrence Anthony is approached asking if he would accept a herd of ‘rouge’ elephants on his reserve, although he does not have experience with elephants, on hearing that they will be shot if he doesn’t take them, he agrees.....despite the fact that they are also known escape artists. The elephants are literally as mad as hell and hate humans. Somehow Lawrence has to figure out a way to get through to them if he is to guarantee their safety, as well as that of his staff and his family.

Oh my heart....this is seriously one of the most beautiful and moving books I have ever had the pleasure of reading. It will make you laugh and it will make you cry and at times will have your adrenaline pumping as you go through some heart stopping experiences with Lawrence.

Everything about this book is just so moving....from Lawrence’s measured, considered approach to problems and coming up with solutions, to the insights and lessons he learns from his herd. This is not solely about the elephants, other animals are also included, as is day-to-day life on a game reserve. If you love animals you absolutely need to read this book. But if you love elephants in particular (as I do) this book will completely capture your heart. ALL THE STARS!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Such is Africa, the flawed, beautiful, magnificent, beguiling, mystical, unique, life-changing continent... it's seductive charm and charisma, its ancient wisdom so often stained bby unfathomable spasms of blood.

What an amazing life, to life your passion, and to really make an impact on the world. Elephants are my favorite animal, and this book just confirmed why that is. I was especially intrigued by the research showing how these animals can communicate across the whole continent. There are also many more lessons on how we can learn to improve our own lives by looking towards wild animals.

So touching...heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. Very good book.
