What an incredible story that I couldn't put down. Having finished the book, I did some more reading about him- one of those truly courageous people. I was saddened to learn of his passing, not at all surprised the elephants paid tribute to him, and looking forward to reading his wife's book when it is published this summer.
Loved the elephants, some great stories, moments of odd narration and sometimes viewpoints I'd love to hear a witness's take on.
The story, itself, is what makes this book worth reading, because it is such a lovely insight into life as an owner of a game reserve and gives you a good look into tribal politics etc, the writing itself was not that great. I would recommend reading it because it is a very quick read, and the story is certainly inspirational, but it was not jaw-dropping in the literary sense.

The title of this book suggests you are about to read some rubbish YA crap, but this was the most heart breaking non-fiction book about conservation. I never, ever, ever cry in books and this made me cry.
DNF
I tried to keep going, but by the 7th chapter I still wasn't engaged and the author kept hashing out the same situation. The book seemed promising, but my nonfiction reads really have to grab and hold my attention to keep me going and this one fell short.

This had an interesting premise, but I wasn't very engaged. I also just generally have a hard time with animal death which is talked about throughout a lot of parts of the book. But overall I just wasn't very interested, I wanted a lot more about elephants, not just descriptions of what happened with this guy and this herd, so probably just wasn't for me.
Spoiler: I didn't finish the last chapter due to the description of the animal's death.
Read on Chapter A Day Monday, March 26 through Friday, April 20, 2018.

This book grew my heart three sizes and also broke it in half. I was emotional enough already, and then reading reviews let me know Lawrence Anthony had died. I looked into it and the herd stayed outside of his house mourning for two days and my heart absolutely shattered.
I have had this book for years and I’m mad at myself for waiting so long to read it.
