Rogue elephants. What do you do with them? Well, you either kill them or you call the elephant whisperer and hope he can work his magic on them so they don't have to die. This was the case in 1999 for Lawrence Anthony who was living and working on a reserve in South Africa. He was the elephant whisperer in question and was given just one chance to save the lives of 9 elephants that would otherwise be shot and killed.
A touching memoir about fascinating animals, their interactions with each other and with humans.
Having not read the original version, I'm not sure how the young reader adaption version varies, but this is a solid and challenging read for students grades 6-10.

Lawrence Anthony owns a wildlife reserve in Africa. One day he gets a call offering him a herd of problem elephants that are escape artists. If he does not agree to take the herd, they will be killed. Lawrence agrees and begins an adventure of getting the herd to trust people again while retaining their wild nature. I loved this book. I love reading about animal conservation. I liked reading about what goes into running a nature preserve in Africa. The information about the animals was interesting and kept my interest, but I really I liked reading about how the author worked with the local Zulu neighbors. Not only did I learn a lot about elephants and other animals on the reserve, but I also learned a lot about Africa. I will definitely read more books by Lawrence Anthony.
A really sweet and atmospheric read. Perfect for mental transportation out of current circumstances. I would recommend this book to anyone.
I do have to say though - it was funny how many times his “usually very obedient and best-behaved” dog acted “out of character” and did something he wasn’t supposed to do! How many times does a dog have to not do what he’s told before he can no longer be considered super??

I cried and cried. I love elephants, and the way the author writes about them gives them an aura of magic.
Recommended by a friend, this one is a treasure. I love elephants, I love that they are family oriented and I love that they remember. This story of a conservationist and how he befriended a herd of elephants is very touching. Elephants should always have their family around them.

I got this book on an Audible.com Daily Deal, and then only when I was assured by goodreads reviews that this had nothing to do with dog whispering.
Then low and behold it just one an Audi Award for best narrator.
The incredible, Simon Vance.
Vance did indeed do a very good job accenting and intoning the endless series of emergency calls managing a wildlife reserve seems to consist of.
I was kept at the edge of my seat most of the time. and the rest of the time I was in awe at the kind of connection people can have with animals.
The editor of the audio version however doesn't deserve and Audi as there are a number of occasions where you can feel that a sentence has been spliced in. Suddenly a few words are spoken in a different, rather flat tone, before returning to the pitch and feel of the previous section.
