Another 700 pages of political intrigue in kinky, Gnostic Renaissance faux France, with a side trip to faux Venice. This kind of binging is pretty much exactly the same experience as when, two days after Valentine's Day, I ate the entire bag of peppermint patties I got on sale--enjoyable at the time, but foolish in retrospect.
The re-reading continued and I find myself upgrading my rating from two to three stars. I think it's still a step down from the first book, but I found myself focusing far more on the relationship and reality of the gods for these characters and was able to focus more on the interludes and adventures, since I already knew where we were going to find Melisande.
Way more politics than its predecessor, but it's entertaining.

Son of a bitch, Carey is magnificent. Truly anything and everything you want in a complete, low fantasy story, down to an epic, epic duel at the end. She's 2 for 2 in immensely satisfying endings.
The only complaints I have are fairly minor: Carey falls into the trap of having her characters repeat what happened in the previous book (presumably for the reader's benefit), and it happened often enough to be tiresome. Still somewhere in the middle regarding the prose; mostly beautiful, but I tend to get annoyed at seeing things like "she arrived presently" rather than "she arrived soon."
