These books are such a romp -- ever so much fun. This volume of the trilogy has less sex and more intrigue, which is vastly more up my alley; Phedre's scenes with her patrons are fun, but I'll always love an intrigue novel.

If you can get past the sex, S&M aspect, and the age at which it starts, this is a great thriller. Phrèdre no Delaunay is a child who is given to what we would call a whorehouse. But in the age that this book is set, courtesans are highly regarded and trained. At the age of 10 she is sold (indentured) to Anafiel Delaunay and her lessons include listening, seeing, reasoning, and languages. She is like a daughter to Delaunay. But he has a purpose in how he uses his pupils and that is where the intrigue.
I read the paperback which is 900 pages long. It was difficult to put down as I wanted to know what was she going to get herself into next.
The supporting characters are fully developed and I had a vested interest in what happened to them.
