This wasn’t quite what I expected coming out of booktok. Very well written
Better paced than the first, plenty of adventure and intrigue throughout.
I don't even remember what happened in the parts I did read.
Too tedious and too much time between books so i forgot

I enjoyed the first book better. The pacing felt slower and I got annoyed with Joscelin and Phèdre’s constant fighting, but that’s also a personal preference. I really dislike love interests that are constantly warring with each other through misunderstands and fights. I also felt like the adventure in this book was forced. In the first book, I really enjoyed that Phèdre was pushed into Skaldia and Alba and had great adventures there, but in this book, the only location change I really believed in was La Serenissima. Her stories in Epidauro and Kriti felt pretty convenient in order to keep her moving from place to place. Finally, I was a little annoyed with absolutely everyone being in love with Phèdre or being absolutely stricken with her in a non romantic or sexual way: from Severio to Kazan to Pasiphae, etc. I want someone to see Phèdre as a normal person and turn her down for once.
Things that I did like: I really liked Severio as a character. Honestly I was rooting for him over Joscelin for the first half of the book until he turns into a jerk. The writing is unique but slows down my reading speed. The showdown in Asherat-if-the-Sea’s temple was pretty exciting.

Phèdre if you had a nickel every time you get kidnapped by a foreign national immediately after receiving a very valuable necklace you'd have two nickels, which isn't much but it's weird that happened twice

As the sequel to the best debut fantasy novel I have ever read, I assumed Kushiel's Chosen wouldn't be as good as the first book of the series; after all, how do you improve upon perfection? Well, Jacqueline Carey proved me wrong in the most emphatic way. This book is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. It's the best book in any genre I have read so far. There's literally nothing about this story that I didn't love.

Good, but nowhere near as good as book 1. It takes a while to get interesting, and it's only in the last third that it gets really exciting. But I like these characters and this world, and will therefore continue.
