“You’ve got a royal name; did you know that?”
I just stared at him, wondering if he was for real.
“About the only thing even close to being royal in my life,” I replied dryly.

This book was something I never thought I needed. Princess Ballot was full of intrigue and secrets, backstabbing and friendship, and some great steamy scenes and sexual tension.

Violet Spencer is a badass character. She holds her own and she’s quick witted and snarky. I absolutely loved her!
When she’s selected to attend Arbon Academy, she is completely floored. She dreams of a higher education and leaving poverty behind. Little does she know what lies ahead of her.

“Shut your filthy mouth, Rafe,” Alex spat at him, pointing with a threatening finger. “That’s my future wife you’re trashing.”

There’s a handful of royals closest to Violet throughout this story, but two in particular take the main stage with her. Out of these two, I was a goner for one the moment he appeared on paper and I built my ship. Now I just hope the ship sails.

This was such a fun read. The characters are super entertaining. I loved the banter between Violet and pretty much every other character in this book. I loved the friendships she made as well as those that already existed when she joined the academy. If there is something I really enjoy in a story it’s the relationships that are made known to us, especially the friendships. Friendship and loyalty runs deep within these characters.

There are so many secrets surrounding each and every one of these characters that it made it super hard to put this book down. I was constantly trying to figure out what turn the story would take. I had my guesses which were pretty close to how things unraveled closer to the end.

“Careful, Cinderella...”

I’m rooting for Violet all the way and I can’t wait to see what happens next!

If you enjoy broody, a-hole characters, royal drama, and dark backstories; go pick this one up. I promise you’ll be hooked!

Well shit I was not expecting to love this that much.
Don't even get me started on that ending. I'm so glad I read this once the whole series is out cause what happened at the end. Wow.
These 2 authors are my go too by themselves so it's so fun to see them co write a series together

Ok

I like violet. I like Mattie… I like most of the one dimensional characters. I’m intrigued enough to try the second book, however there is nothing in the plot that’s particularly drawing me in or making it a wow book. There’s some plot holes, there’s some over used plot devices, but it’s easy to read. One thing I don’t love is the Americanisms in a Swiss school. I know the main character is American, as is one of her friends, but there is no way they call first year ‘freshman year’. Also, there is things like a nice gesture being a gift if pain killers from an anonymous friend with thousands of dollars, but next time she’s hurt, she has some just in her drawer. And paper is scarce and she’s says lots of time she has no money, but her bag is loaded up with books it’s so heavy on her back.

Ha, I fucking called it.

The predictability of these sorts of books leaves much to be desired. They're starting to be similar to one another, almost beat for beat. The moment Alex showed up, I instantly knew what was going to happen. The authors didn't even need to try to plant seeds with "his fiancee died under mysterious circumstances" or even the rivalry he had with Rafe. All the evidence I needed was there in the fact that Alex was friendly and not a dark, moody jerk.

Like, there was no way a character like Alex wouldn't be evil when these books have made a living off of turning every rude, broody asshole into the star of the show by bending over backwards to justify their behaviors and show they're not total monsters.

Although I got through the story easy, it wasn't anything new or especially gripping.

Violet is every badass orphan character you've ever read, except she smuggles in a secret sword somehow (yeah, I'm sure a world suddenly controlled by monarchs would abandon basic security screenings like putting everyone through a metal detector or checking bags) and at 18 is an experienced underground sword fighter? This b-plot was dumb; it would've made more sense if she had a history of using martial arts to take down fighters for money or something. What modern day person would be teaching actual sword fighting to a teen girl? I know this is set in a sort of "after world war III" kind of world, but, it's not so removed from this timeline that a girl doing underground fights with a sword would make sense.

But okay, fine. I'll let the book have that. It's still dumb but whatever.

The rest of the plot, however, and subsequently the characters and tropes, are woefully similar to every other "poor girl thrust into the world of rich" book that wants to be gritty. If you tend to read a lot of books in this genre, you've already experienced this book in its entirety. Trust me, it offers nothing new.

Plus, a lot of random details don't tend to add up.

I will say that I liked this book a lot more than the other book I read that was written by these two authors, [b:Broken Wings|44020179|Broken Wings (Dark Legacy, #1)|Jaymin Eve|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1552799909l/44020179._SY75_.jpg|68443618], so I would recommend this series over that one if I had to choose one.

I don't know if I'll be continuing with the series; it's just... unoriginal and predictable without even offering any worthwhile character development or romance. Book #2 is slated for release in June, but odds are I won't be bothering.

I'll give it 3 stars for being palatable, but I wouldn't go higher because while it doesn't do anything awful, it also didn't care to try to rise above being like every other story in its genre.

General warnings for alcohol consumption, some bullying, cussing, violence, sex, etc. It's definitely not a YA title.
