This novel certainly had an interesting concept, at least in the synopsis. But eventually it turned into a typical time-travel story. It was definitely entertaining, but not perfect or the most original in execution.

this book is fairly dark so i want to give a content warning for self-harm and suicide; as well as
graphic descriptions of atomic warfare.

this book was a very interesting listen. super fast paced, didn’t want to put it down. it brought up a lot of interesting ethics and thought provoking problem solving on the readers end, as you try to piece how it could end together.
there were only a few things i had problems with. i wish i had felt more convinced by some of the relationships in this story. i also didn’t like that we didn’t get a full description of Helena’s appearance until the very end of the story, it was a small detail but it felt strange to leave it out until then.
Barry is also a cop, which in it of itself is fine, there is plenty of media about law enforcement that i enjoy (b99 anyone?). but it was hard for me to listen to a few moments where he was very comfortable with the idea of just pulling out his gun and using it to fix a situation, or getting out of problems (that aren’t work related) because he can just say “i’m NYPD”. there was just some abuse of power there with him and his job. i personally could have done without those moments.

I listened to the audiobook. Wow. This story dragged on for a really long time. When everything is revealed I thought “oh I must be getting close to the end.” No. I was only 50% through the book. I keep listening because I needed something to listen to while I was doing chores around the house.
If you watch/read enough time travel fiction you can guess what the solution is pretty easily on. It was a very frustrating listening to them fail over and over again. Just go to the first timeline idiots. That’s always the solution. I also did not understand why Helena had to go back with all the memories alone. Barry could’ve done the same thing and it would’ve saved Helena from having to explain everything to him. I also did not like when Barry was explaining the meaning of life. 50 cent did a better and more concise job in his song “Many Men.”
Too long. I also remember not liking Dark Matter by the same author. Maybe their writing is not for me.

I read this in one sitting! I was hoping for a gripping, thought-provoking sci fi read and man, this delivered. There were a couple face palm moments when I just wanted to shout at the characters, but that really didn’t ruin the experience for me. Highly recommend!
