“We had everything we needed. None of it was big. Most of it was simple. But what I knew in that moment was that the size of your home, your car, your wallet, doesn't have one single thing to do with the size of your life. And my life . . . my life felt big, filled with love and with meaning.”

This book was so beautiful and real. The pain that both Tenleigh and Kyland suffered from such a young age is so heartbreaking. To learn the things they’be been through and how hard they’re working to just get through every day things that most people take for granted.

“I do go to hell. Every day. For you."

Their love story felt so big, compared to how small their world has been. This book touches on real subjects such as poverty, grief, mental illness and loneliness.

“When it came to you, I noticed everything. I fell halfway in love with you before we ever spoke a word.”

Their relationship felt so real and their connection felt so deep despite how little they’ve experienced so far. Both Tenleigh and Kyland are hoping for a scholarship to get out of their small mining town with little too offer. When they fall in love knowing only one of them to win small choices end up making a really big impact on themselves and life. After something tore them apart Tenleigh comes back 4 years later. This book shows the power of sacrifices and how even with having so little to offer you can make such big impacts in your community. With and without a degree.

“Half agony, half hope. Half pain, half ecstasy. Half grief, half joy. Half my downfall, half my savior.”

I love that after so much struggle and pain they got their happy ending they deserved and it doesn’t take a full bank account to be happy. Happiness is what you make of your life. And it felt like a very needed lesson in life right now.

“But when pain is over, the remembrance of it often becomes a pleasure."

This is the type of romance book that will make you feel it all, and if you plan to read just one Mia Sheridan book, this one is it!!

Taking place place in a tiny mining town in the Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky, Kyland transports you to a world where the characters struggle from intense poverty, never having enough food to eat, electricity to get them through the month or a mode of transportation to commute the 6 miles to school or work. Alternating between Tenleigh and Kyland’s POVs, these two strangers/ academic rivals, who are both working towards the same college scholarship (the one that will get them out), end up forming a special friendship that you will not be able to let go of. However, when the line between friendship and love starts to blur, their future becomes uncertain.

I loved how the book explored powerful themes, such as true, unconditional love, sacrifice and hope. Like the characters in the book, I too was holding on to the hope that life would someday get better and brighten for these two and that they would find the happiness they deserve.

Read if you like:
-Strangers to friends to lovers
-Second chance romance
-Dual POVs with a time jump
-Bonding over books
