This. Book. This is one of the best, most heartfelt and amazing stories I have ever read. I am so embarrassed to say that when I first started reading this book, I actually had a hard time understanding the poverty that Kyland and Tenleigh live in. I thought there was no way in this day and age that people actually live like that in the US. Then I turned to google and looked up poverty in Appalachia and I cried for an hour. I went back and read more of this book and I couldn't stop thinking of the pictures I saw. This book has had such a huge effect on me and is something that will stay with me forever. My heart broke for what these two characters went through. This story is so beautifully written it was so easy to love these characters and want them to find a way to make it knowing the odds were against them. Kyland is the ultimate book boyfriend and I absolutely adored him even when I didn't like him. This is a top pick of 2015 and going on my all-time favorites list. I loved this book!

re-read on Nov 30, 2015. I loved this book even more the second time I read it. There's something so magical about the way this author writes. I love this book!!!!!

The setting was described so well that I could see myself walking in the mountains with Tenleigh.

I enjoyed the dynamic that the mental health issues played on the family relationships. Mia combined a love story with challenging topics like poverty and misunderstanding.

I certainly did NOT expect what we learned about Kyland's mom! Not only were Tenleigh and Kyland likeable, but so were most of their neighbors and community members.

I didn't like how the scholarship award came about, but I also understand why Kyland did what he did. Not many would make the same sacrifice. These characters have stuck with me.

“We had everything we needed. None of it was big. Most of it was simple. But what I knew in that moment was that the size of your home, your car, your wallet, doesn't have one single thing to do with the size of your life. And my life . . . my life felt big, filled with love and with meaning.”

This book was so beautiful and real. The pain that both Tenleigh and Kyland suffered from such a young age is so heartbreaking. To learn the things they’be been through and how hard they’re working to just get through every day things that most people take for granted.

“I do go to hell. Every day. For you."

Their love story felt so big, compared to how small their world has been. This book touches on real subjects such as poverty, grief, mental illness and loneliness.

“When it came to you, I noticed everything. I fell halfway in love with you before we ever spoke a word.”

Their relationship felt so real and their connection felt so deep despite how little they’ve experienced so far. Both Tenleigh and Kyland are hoping for a scholarship to get out of their small mining town with little too offer. When they fall in love knowing only one of them to win small choices end up making a really big impact on themselves and life. After something tore them apart Tenleigh comes back 4 years later. This book shows the power of sacrifices and how even with having so little to offer you can make such big impacts in your community. With and without a degree.

“Half agony, half hope. Half pain, half ecstasy. Half grief, half joy. Half my downfall, half my savior.”

I love that after so much struggle and pain they got their happy ending they deserved and it doesn’t take a full bank account to be happy. Happiness is what you make of your life. And it felt like a very needed lesson in life right now.

“But when pain is over, the remembrance of it often becomes a pleasure."

Kyland is so sweet everything came full circle. He switched the scholarship to her and worked where his fam died just so she has a chance had to tell her he had a kid. Paid for her moms care. God and the lavender business. They started a school together. Stayed in Kentucky. This is an amazing sir.
