I think this sits at 3.5 for me. in a lot of ways this reminded me of Anna Burns’s Milkman—both about a young woman navigating life, discovering her sexuality, and living during The Troubles in Ireland. the comparison is pretty surface level, but the quiet, tense narrative voice of both are also similar. I enjoyed listening to the story, and the audiobook reader did a great job. there’s lot at stake in this novel and the author explores a diverse array of issues, both specific to The Troubles (eg, the class dimensions of anti-Catholic sentiment) and also more general (eg, being a nosy young woman who’s trying to figure out her life and sexuality), but I felt that it lacked depth at some points.

This book was totally not at all what I expected. Frankly, until the epilogue I was turned off by it, but it pulled it all together nicely because the book is not about what is presents to be. It’s about love in war but not in the way you think.

This book was heartbreaking. But lovely and so well written.
