I like the concept, but the writing style just didn't work for me. The ending also left me feeling a bit let down, Alex's arc still feels unfinished in some way.

I don't need additional reasons to rage at circumstances beyond my control, I'm already a woman living in the patriarchy. If we had managed to get to the "fun" part of this book before the half-way point, I could have put up better with the misery set-up.

Not sure how I feel about this one yet. So much to love. So much to be aggravated about.

I felt the purpose of this book got muddled along the way.  It was very slow-paced.  I appreciated the complexity of the relationships, but there were a lot of loose ends that didn’t tie off, in my opinion.  Maybe that was the point.  The sentimentality at the end redeemed the rest of the book for me.

Although I do think the end of the book could have stood to get a haircut of about 50 pages or so (typical youth fiction author feels the need to play out the entire lives of her characters) the book was an interesting foray into magical realism, with some really difficult hit-too-close-to-home moments and some beautiful passages toward the end. I wish the author had spent more time with the dragons (and clearly, she wanted to, hence the drag toward the end) but what time we did get was lots of fun.
