4.05 AVERAGE

This is one of the rare example when the movie amplified the novel. I love how the Coen brothers translated the novel well.
So many reviews on how the story inspired them bla bla or how it's actually about Sheriff Bell rather than Llewelyn Moss and Chigurh... Which I find as funny cause some stories aren't about certain person or the main characters at all.
In a subjective world like this is, impression greatly differ and it should not be a big deal.

This is the first McCarthy novel I’ve finished (gave up early in Blood Meridian). It’s well-written in terms of bleak atmosphere and capturing the local dialects. I don’t mind bleakness and was expecting morally-complex characters and a grim plot. But this was definitely a “deconstructed” crime novel in that the main action sequences toward the end are glossed over or else told in past tense. So whatever suspense was building along the way is just snuffed out.

And then we go right back to hearing more about the sheriff’s guilt and angst as though the main plotlines didn’t even matter. I feel fairly unsatisfied by this kind of story structure and just didn’t really care about the sheriff’s existential crisis by the end.

Also, if you like well-written female characters, don’t waste your time on this book. All of the women are just accessories to their men.

a thrilling read with many layers. it was honestly very hard to digest all of this in one read. maybe I'll revisit someday!

Easily the most excessable of McCarthy's novel, pretty standard thriller novel. The antagonist of the story was incredibly well written, and really pushed the story forwards.
