Eh

There was definitely potential but it was so painfully slow at times. I found myself skipping over several parts because it was so slow. The characters weren’t all the likable either. Leena was fine but I didn’t like her love interest at all. I think he was supposed to be this cool but dangerous type of man, kind of like Kaz from Six of Crows but he just so lame. He acted like such a big baby and acted very immature unlike the 100 year immortal he’s supposed to be. There was just so many issues with it and I really wished I liked it more.

Um okay I LOVED this book! I found the world, magic system, and characters so interesting and unique. Like I want to be a beast charmer and have a little beast family to keep me company. And the characters! Strong yet troubled because of their pasts that made them super relatable! I LOVED Leena! She was such a baddie but also super vulnerable at the same time. This also has a great found family element to it as well! And the side characters were just as interesting as the main characters and has the best personalities. Also Noc got me with his troubled past and bad boy attitude with dark hair and eyes. Definitely gave me Will Herondale vibes, especially because if his relationship/ need to stay away from Leena. I’m so pumped for the rest of the series. My only mistake is that this is a 6 book series and only the first 2 books are out with the 3rd coming out later in 2021 so I will have to SUFFER

Even though this took me a week, I still really enjoyed it. The world was intriguing, and I loved the beasts. The characters were good, too. Leena was strong and resilient, though she was a bit too forgiving of Noc sometimes. I mean, we understand from his POV why he is the way he is, but...man. On the other hand, it made misunderstandings shorter, so it works both ways. I loved Oz and Calem so much! I'm really interested in what's going to happen with Kost and a character we meet near the end.

This book was pretty dark. It's definitely adult. There are some sex scenes, but more than that, there is some pretty graphic violence. I only point this out because I myself was confused as to whether this book was YA or adult when I first saw it. There are some slower parts, but the action definitely picked up in the latter half. What with there being a pretty major unsolved issue, I'm definitely reading book 2 when it comes out.

This is a very easy read if you like this genre. It is definitely a romance book with some fantasy not a fantasy with romance if you get what I mean. It was sort of a mix of Pokemon meets magical fantasy land that made it a little difficult for me to not roll my eyes at. A couple parts kind of made me cringe especially at the beginning of the book when the Leena and Noc first start to get to know each other. Too many long stares and just awkwardness for me. I honestly didn't find Leena to be that great of a character. She was supposed to be strong and such but had a few to many mini breakdowns/fits for me to really think of her as such. Noc also was a little dramatic to me. I get that he is cursed and all but he still kind of fell short as a main lead to me. I honestly enjoyed Kost, Calem, and Ozias more than the 2 main characters. The story felt original and that alone would be enough to read it for me. It looks like its going to be a trilogy and I am sure I will finish reading them once they come out.

What happens when you mix Pokemon with fantasy romance? You get KINGDOM OF EXILES!

It is been far, far too long since we’ve had a new paranormal romance in the vein of Night Huntress and Kate Daniels, and Martineau delivers. She gives us Leena, an exiled beast charmer doing her best to survive on her own. But her deals lead her to Noc, the guild assassin leader whose emotions are on high-security lockdown. He accepted a bounty on her head and he has her, but first he makes a deal with Leena for her to deliver four beasts.

And so their journey begins. Leena is on the lookout for the perfect beasts for Noc and his men while also searching for a legendary beast for herself, one that could be her ticket out of exile.

Before Leena has the chance to connect with such a beast, the target on her back becomes apparent and Noc does the unimaginable, he protects her. Now Noc isn’t just the leader, he’s got crazy powers and he also has a curse. He knows what kind of beast he wants from Leena, the kind that would be able to free him once and for all. So maybe that’s why he saves Leena? Nah, he’s really just giving his curse the finger and taking a risk.

The world building is amazing, the beasts and the magic system are fantastic, and the secondary characters are strong and well-thought out. Basically, KINGDOM OF EXILES is a great read and an even greater start to a new series. I can’t wait for book two!

Kingdom of Exiles is book 1 in The Beast Charmer series. This cover is stunning and the blurb really caught my interest at first glance. I'm so glad I tried this novel because it was a unique Fantasy that I didn't want to put down.

Our leading lady, Leena Edenfrell is a beast charmer that's been exiled from her fellow beast charmers. To be able to survive she's doing something against their beliefs, selling some of the beasts she captures. Someone has it out for Leena, they hire the Cruor a brotherhood of assassins to find and kill her. What they didn't count on was that the leader, Noc would strike a bargain with Leena for him and his team to get beasts. Along their journey we learn more about the abilities of a beast charmer and little glimpses of what the Cruor stand for. It's a really interesting and unique world to say the least. I'm utterly charmed by some of the beasts that Leena captures and cannot wait to see what the next installment brings us.

Kingdom of Exiles is a breath of fresh air in the genre with vivid imagination. The pacing was a tiny bit off in a few spots for my taste but overall the novel was great. I loved the characters and the plot and am left intrigued and wanting the next book. If you're a fan of fantasy books you're going to love this new series.

Ah this book was so good! A great jump to read after ACOTR.
