super fun and creative...(vaguely reminiscent of Black Sun Rising by CS Friedman but only in the feelings it evoked, not so much in plot line)

I had a difficult time getting through this, at one point setting it aside and later coming back to it. The idea behind the story with the beast charmers was intriguing, but I was frustrated and disappointed with its execution.

To begin with, I found Leena and Noc’s thoughts and emotions to be at odds with their supposed characters. Leena was presented as a pragmatic woman who had forged a tough life for herself after being exiled and who was at least somewhat worldly when it came to men. Yet her puppy love-like thoughts about Noc nearly from the start seemed out of place and a bit silly. In addition, her almost virginal blushing routine when one of the assassins took off his shirt and came on to her seemed odd for someone who admittedly enjoyed uncomplicated physical relationships with men. Similarly, Noc was supposed to be a detached killer who eschewed personal entanglements yet he too quickly succumbed to the pitter pat puppy love when he saw Leena. When the insta-love turned into real love, I never really bought into it.

In addition, Leena too often was outright stupid in her actions.
SpoilerShe too quickly trusted Noc and the others and repeatedly depleted her energies, leaving herself vulnerable, sometimes for no good reason. She missed the obvious loophole in Noc’s vow not to let his men kill her. She claimed she was forced to sell her beasts to survive, but she easily could have used her own beasts’ abilities (healing, creating food, etc.) and sold her services through them to make a living. Heck, she could have worked waiting tables or other jobs nonmagical people did. There were other instances I can’t recall offhand.
I found myself being exasperated with her (and Noc) for much of the book.

While there were some unanswered questions left at the end of the book, particularly about Noc’s history, I am not drawn enough to the story to read another book in the series to find the answers.

I would put this at a 3.5

I enjoyed reading this. The characters were fun, the writing was very descriptive, and the plot took you on an adventure.

With a positive reading experience I had, sharing pieces with boyfriend so he also was entertained, I would say it's a fun read.

I got so many Fairy Tail vibes from this book. Leena is very Lucy with how the summoning of beasts work. Really cool.

I really loved Noc as a character. This dude was sexy and morally grey AF. Such
a great time to love assassins am I right?!

Some thing that I wasn't too thrilled with:

The pacing was a bit of an issue. There was action but then it would slam you to a stop on the next page. Sometimes that's good to have, but it happened a lot, which had me rolling my eyes a little bit.

Spoiler When they finally said they loved each other...they didn't stop. I kept thinking "yes, I get it, you love each other, now can we move on to the next location?"

Spoiler I would have liked the love story to have grown a bit more. This isn't the end of their story, so more of a build up spread out over the books would have been better. Unless they break up and end up with other people by the end, which isn't the vibe I'm getting by the words they're using to describe each other.

Pick this one up and give it a go! You may find your next favorite book.

Overall Opinion:
Hands down a phenomenal read from beginning to end! There just any enough words to express how immensely I've enjoyed this. The freshing concept that was filled with action-packed supernatural and paranormal elements almost left me to my knees with the author great writing style and should we also mention the characters? Needless to say that it became more than difficult to choose who was my favorite. Was it Noc, Calem, Kost, Leena or the other characters that left a good impression on me? I'm pretty sure there wasn't a character I didn't like and that includes Wynn and Winnow. Moreso each character, rather big or small, brought something to the story and that ultimately lead to the spectacular cliffhanger, if you want to call it that. This was definitely a series where Assassin’s Creed meets Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and it's worth the long read. During the course of this read, I seriously couldn't put this down and before I knew it I have made it to the epilogue but fortunately enough there is still much more to the story and I can't wait for the release of the of remainder parts of “The Beast Charmer Series”. Let's just say 2020 couldn't come fast enough!

This was a book that I was really anticipating this year and I enjoyed it. But I was somewhat disappointed and underwhelmed. I didn’t enjoy the romance as much, I felt it was too insta-lovey which to be fair it just isn’t and never was my thing. I felt like everything was solved easily as the story progressed and I just expected and wanted more hate-to-love banter and angst and I just didn’t get that. It was a really interesting read, I did see myself wanting to pick up the book as it reminded me of Pokémon and I just was genuinely interested in what happened next. The characters were likeable but forgettable. I enjoyed the world to some extent and I didn’t have any problems with the writing.

Definitely wasn't awful but kind of boring. They fall in love way too easily and there isn't enough of the enemies to lovers tension. There was a lot working for this book it's too bad it fell flat because this could have been very good if it was darker, more brutal, and more mysterious. Like, they only knew each other for a few days before Leena was like "I love Noc and they're my family". It was too hokey and cheesy for my tastes.

I don't think I'll read the rest of the series but I'm definitely interested in finding out who Noc really is.. I hope he was super evil and terrible before he got turned. That would be fun.
