I enjoyed this book, but I think I would have liked it even more if I’d read rather than listened to it. You never know whether a certain audiobook narrator will make or break how you experience a story, and I think the narrator of this one in particular hindered my experience, so I’m almost rating this as I think I would have rated a physical book reading experience, if that makes sense? Good story, interesting characters, enjoyable settings, and when I next find a used copy of this I’ll pick it up to try rereading another time.

I’ve read this several times (and, of course, watched the movie dozens of times). Reading it with the Welty House Book club has been a wonderful experience—I’m seeing so much more in it this time.
Including what an interesting character Charlotte Bartlett is! And Professor Kelly Marsh’s insights have been the best, as she has led the discussions. I’ve especially appreciated her analysis of the different narrative approaches throughout, how it goes from omniscient to even free indirect discourse at times.

A pleasant read, not exceptional, but still with an elegant style. Halfway between classic and contemporary literature, there are parts which feel a little outdated, while others seem quite modern and engaging. The characters are interesting, yet I cannot help finding their interactions somewhat unreal, lacking further development.
I have seen somewhere else that this work is considered a good introduction to Forster, probably due to its short length. It has served me to get used to his writing style, which I loved, but I doubt this is his best novel. I will have to read more of his.

This is an Edwardian romance novel about a girl choosing between conventional expectations or someone she never expected to like. I read this as a teenager and didn’t enjoy it. I thought the language was too flowery, the plot didn’t really go anywhere and it felt like the characters were all just mouthpieces for the author’s opinion on what he thought love ought to look like.
I thought I might be more enlightened by now so I read it again with more mature eyes, and came to exactly the same conclusions. I suppose I should have expected this though as I generally find novels that are entirely romance-driven pretty boring and self-indulgent. It needed more plot to make us care about them in the first place and allow their characters to be seen and appreciated by the reader so we could share in the attraction & believe their motivations.

Lovely narrator, and interesting story, but not as interesting as I'd hope it would be.
