It’s been a while since I read this book and I started reading it again until I noticed that I have in fact read this book and forgot all about it. Like seriously… I do not remember a single thing.
Where to start...
I really debated whether to give this book a 3/5 or 4/5 stars rating. Like I REALLY thought about it, and obviously ended up going with 3/5. Let me just say that I am really disappointed that I didn't love this book. Especially when everyone raves about it and it has an overall good rating. This is one of those books that I've kept putting off for a while because I just didn't feel like reading a sad love story.
I was loving the first half of this book, I even enjoyed the "poetry" aspect of it (if you can even call it that)
I actually got excited when I read the first "Miles" chapter, because I love poetry. It can make you feel so many emotions with only a small amount of words. And I guess that's what CH was trying to do here?? I don't even know. What I do know is that something that started off as a cute teenage romance love-at-first-sight type of thing became so annoying I wanted to set the book on fire. We get it Miles...
You.
LOVE.
RACHEL.

Rachel Rachel Rachel RAChel RACHEEELLLLL. Everything is Rachel!!!!
I have never gone from loving to hating a book so fast in my life. I basically didn't like any of the characters in this book, the only "sane" person here is Corbin, and even he has his own overly protective issues.
And Tate has absolutely no self respect, none at all. It's frightening, She was falling in love with someone who treated her like complete crap. But how do you even fall in love with someone you barely know anything about?! And him and the "I will never love again, love is pain" just give me a break!
The whole time I'm here thinking that this dude needs therapy! How has he gone such a long time in utter misery without seeking help.
Basically I don't want to read another book where a character has the name Rachel, for a very long time.

I think I enjoyed this one more than It Ends With Us however it’s perfectly on the cusp of cute and cringe with equal parts of smut. 4 stars
I’m not typically a romance reader, but Ugly Love helped me understand what it is about romance stories that I do like by doing everything so wrong. The characters here are flat and boring, and even with point of view changes every chapter (which is incidentally a style of storytelling I absolutely loathe) none of them have their own voice. They all think the same way, using the same sort of language. A good romance needs strong lead characters. We should want to see their relationship grow and how they deal with their conflicts. In Ugly Love, Colleen Hoover takes a shortcut by having every romantic relationship be a result of love at first sight, because that’s easier than building relationships between characters that the reader would want to root for.
This book ends up with pages and pages of filler between boring sex scenes. The pacing is slow, and the chapters where breadcrumbs about the “mysterious”male lead’s past are given out are padded and stretched to the breaking point. It takes almost the entire length of the book to learn about the traumatic incident in his past, and once it’s revealed the story suddenly rushes to its happily ever after conclusion and epilogue within about thirty pages.
If you’re the type of reader who skims through books looking for their favourite tropes, Colleen Hoover is the author for you. For those of us who like a little substance in the books read, we’re better off staying far away from her brand of boring melodrama.

What happens when two people come together and agree to start a no strings relationship? Will love take over even though this wasn’t wanted? Or will the past haunt them forever and tear them apart?
Not sure why it took me so long to dive into a Colleen Hoover novel, but I am so glad I did. This of course, is the first novel I have read by the author and it will not be my last. Hoover has a way of writing a romance novel that leaves readers feeling satisfied. Similarly, Hoover is able to successfully weave the story from both characters points of view. Sometimes this is a hard feat because readers end up picking sides. But for this one, I understood the emotions and actions from both Tate and Miles. WOW. It’s just, plain, beautiful. I felt a myriad of emotions reading this one. I some points I felt pure lust, in others I became an emotional wreck. I am so glad I picked up this book and I have a feeling that many readers would agree! Way to go Hoover, you made me an instant fan-girl.

Edit: Don't listen to the audio book. If you read Ugly Love, read it with your eyes. The poetic writing in Miles' POV and the steamy scenes are not meant for reading aloud.
3,5 stars rounded down.
While Ugly Love is alright overall, there are just so many other books that I would rather recommend + plus I'm not left with the feeling that I'll miss the characters or the story now that it's finished.
"I'm a fool, but at least I'm a self-aware fool."
That quote just gives me the ick because Tate keeps up her self-destructive behaviour even though she knows she shouldn't, if she wants to take care of herself. The whole story ending 'happily ever after' just adds to the romanticization of destructive and toxic relationship behaviour.
On further thought, give Ugly Love 2 stars.
Ugly love is a fair take on the dual POV trope (with a single chapter's exception), but while Miles' and Tate's stories show similarities after 6 years, it just never quite clicks. Most importantly, Miles' behaviour doesn't ever add up to me. Yes, he's closed off because he's scared of being vulnerable again, but WHY DO THEY NOT COMMUNICATE??
Honestly, while being cute and hitting in the feels, this book is mostly frustrating.

3.5. I typically love Colleen Hoover books but this one fell a little flat for me. It also read a little juvenile compared to her others. Still a very fast and engaging read.
