I appreciate what the author has done with this book. It is beautifully written, at times, in ways I did not expect. I wanted to like it. However, it was a slog in many places.

A surreal story following generations of a family line over a century.
While there were bits of this book I found engaging, I often found the plot extremely hard to follow due to the speed with which characters were dropped and picked back up.
The magical realism elements worked really well and added an element of whimsy and intrigue to a plot which is ultimately full of death and suffering.
While I can see the skill in this book, I found it very difficult to get through.

DNF-ed after 150 pages. I started this because it was initially required for my literature class; we ended up not discussing it, so i never got around to finishing it. I have no wish to continue it either, i find the writing style and the overall story boring and I know I won't be able to make it through all the pages with my inner peace and self happiness intact if I keep reading this book.

Mixed feelings about this book, but overall beautiful writing full of magic. This book tells the story of several generations of the Buendia family and the town of Macondo. Character's names, personalities, scandals, dramas, and hopes cycle through each generation, making the cyclical nature of life - and paradoxically it's ephemerality - quite apparent to the reader, and perhaps not so much to the book's characters.
The writing style reminded me greatly of Laura Esquivel's Like Water for Chocolate, which I enjoyed more because of the relateability of it's female characters. My third Gabriel García Márquez book, I've found I often feel like his female characters are not very realistic and are written through a male gaze (despite the fact that they are often strong, independent, and complex characters). This is a large part of why I took of a star.

One of the best books that have ever been written, in any language.

I can barely follow what’s happening and I’m not very interested. Just seems like misogynists taking advantage of women and being possible colonizers.

One of the most intense reading experiences I had as a teenager. Truly a masterpiece. One of my all-time favorite books.
