Garfield has a bucket list for his senior year. One item on his list is to gain weight and another is to kiss his crush. It doesn’t look like either one of these is going to take place. No matter how many protein shakes he drinks or weights he lifts, he can’t seem to get taller or heavier. Gar’s friends try and support him, even though they don’t understand what the big deal is. Gar is getting bold with his attempts to impress the Chosen Ones and accepts a dare that would make most people cringe. The effects of this dare are not what he expected though. He wakes up taller and bulkier … he even seems to be faster. What is causing these changes? Why have people been lying to him?
Teen Titans: Beast Boy is the second Teen Titans graphic novel. Just like “Raven,” this is an independent story that can be read on its own. I enjoyed the creation backstory of this character, but the ending left me feeling as if I should know more. If this becomes part of other stories that come back to Beast Boy to tell what happens next, then that is fine. But, if this is the only graphic novel about this character, it leaves too many unanswered questions. This was a short read (I finished in about an hour) and the graphics were fun. This is a good book as long as you don’t want a complete story.

I was given [b:Teen Titans: Raven|38452813|Teen Titans Raven|Kami Garcia|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1528738829l/38452813._SY75_.jpg|60077986] to read without any prior knowledge of the Teen Titans, but I really enjoyed it, so when I saw the next volume I just had to have it.
Beast Boy is witty, clever and so much fun. Sometimes you're edging Gar on and others you just hold your head in your hands and tell him "Bad Idea Gar"
But rooting for him - even in his stupid moments - is never optional.
And now that I've seen the 3rd Volumes Cover, I know I'll definitely be reading it as well.

Gar is struggling during his senior year: he’s short, can’t seem to gain any muscle no matter how much iron he pumps or protein shakes he drinks, and he hasn’t finished any of the things on his bucket list. So on a whim he accepts a dare to eat a Carolina reaper, and the stunt gains him some notoriety and good grace from some of the popular kids. He accepts more ill-conceived dares to ride the wave as long as possible, but some of them don’t turn out so well. Meanwhile, a stranger who knows his parents shows up and sows seeds of doubt in the supplements he's been taking his whole life, but not taking them means strange things start to happen to him.
While Beast Boy isn't directly related to Raven in the sense that you could read them in either order, it's clear that Garcia is setting up a convergence into a Teen Titans title that will combine the rest of the cast. I expect we will see Starfire, Cyborg, and Robin have their own titles before that happens. Gar in this title is fighting a similar battle to Raven in that he is having to discover himself as his powers begin to manifest. The "big bad" in this story is, once again. bullies, which makes this more a story of self-discovery and self-as-enemy (seeing as Gar talks himself into a lot of the outlandish pranks). Gar's two friends are also well-developed and likable characters.
Picolo's art, like in Raven, focuses on a central color to anchor the rest of the palette. While Beast Boy had way more colors overall than Raven, green was still predominantly placed in every page. The illustrations themselves are inviting and beautiful.
While the main characters are all seniors in high school, there is nothing inappropriate about this title that a middle school student couldn't handle. there is one smooch, and obviously some disobeying rules/laws that happens with the pranks.
Sara's Rating: 9/10
Suitability Level: Grades 7-12

Garcia’s take on the Teen Titans as individuals is impressive, so far. I loved last year’s Raven (she’s my fave), and Beast Boy was nearly as good. In this volume, we get a bit of Garfield Logan’s origin, and the story is enjoyable, but what really got me is the brilliant art and coloring. Picolo really brings the story up a notch. Looks like the next volume, out in February, will be about Beast Boy and Raven together. Can’t wait!
Very cute. I love the green. Some standard “I wish the popular kid liked me” angst, but complicated with the humor coping. Definitely down to read the next one.
