Expecting Better: Why the Conventional Pregnancy Wisdom Is Wrong--And What You Really Need to Know

I appreciated the amount of detail and research that the author went into for many of the topics. Some sections felt rushed such as the chapter on yoga, hot tubs, and gardening. Overall it gave a more balanced approach to pregnancy and childbirth as whole. Unlike the book “what to expect” I felt empowered after reading this book to make choices and have intelligent conversations with my doctors.

My doctor recommended I read this as my first/go-to book after becoming pregnant. I’m so glad I did. It introduced me to all the seemingly-infinite considerations that I’d be faced with during pregnancy and helped me understand them in all their nuanced glory. It helped me feel empowered in the face of all these questions, instead of overwhelmed by fear and anxiety. Of course, there was still plenty of fear (pregnancy risks are not fun to think about, no matter how you spin them!), but knowing the data & being able to use it in light of my own risk tolerances left me feeling much less overwhelmed & powerless; I realized there was a limit to what I could control & had to balance that with trying to find joy and peace during my pregnancy (for myself and my baby, too). My baby just turned one and I see now more than ever how much that lesson might just be the #1 biggest (and hardest) challenge of parenting!

Oops, you dropped this! *hands back biased takes, fatphobia, and ableism*
I have conflicting feelings about this book. On one hand, I enjoyed the sheer amount of data and information, and I found a lot of it helpful! On the other, this book is RIFE with the author's bias, fatphobia, and ableism. I expected some amount of bias (the author is only human!), but I felt that a good portion of the presentation of data was cherry-picked to help back up her personal beliefs. Then there were the chapters on pregnancy weight gain and prenatal screening... Ugh.

It was good but I was expecting more based on all the hype this book received.
It’s also my first baby/parenting book so I’m not really sure what I was expecting.
It’s a helpful, non-biased analysis of the major pregnancy rules (caffeine, alcohol, lunch meat, etc.).
