A valuable scholarly resource, but as a gift book, a little too jam-packed with information for pleasure reading. The original text gets somewhat buried beneath the mountain of (admittedly interesting and well-researched) background information and literary criticism.

Ah, trivia! Never knew the shoes were originally silver! Coolio. I also love the adventures that are in the book that didn't make it into the movie.

I listened to this book via Audible, and the Audible Original Adaption of this book.

I found this book to be incredibly engaging, despite it being a classic children's novel. The amount of imagination and visual imagery is amazing, even when listened to rather than read.

The audible cast did an amazing job with the sound effects. You understood what was happening when characters weren't speaking, and you felt very immersed the whole way through.

The only shock I had was finding out how much violence is truly in the book - especially a children's novel. The audible original gets 5 stars from me, however, and I would be eager to get my hands on a physical copy to read.
