I picked this up on a complete whim while shelving at work and it was completely worth the chance I took on it! It's not often where I can pick up and read something completely free of expectations and it's always nice when it's also genuinely good.
The prose is absolutely stunning, though it can meander at times. Our protagonist is also just. Way too relatable LOL. If you are a neurodivergent family black sheep this book will flay you the fuck open and will not be nice about it!
Besides the meandering prose, my main hang-up is with the ending, which feels rather abrupt. Which I fear is the point, but my personal tastes still stand.

I don't know if I can truly put my feelings into words. I want to cry for Janet because I see so much of myself in her. I'm so grateful to have found a book set in my homeland that isn't a crime novel or a highland romance. The prose was beautiful, and I'll be thinking about this one for many years to come I think.

moriens sed invictus (dying but unconquered). being a girl is hard, being murdered at the 16 is horrific. this was a poetic recount of a young girls life before her untimely death. i got lost in the prose, so i had to reread a lot of passages to get the point. but i did enjoy it!
