I’m honestly shocked this is Stacy Willingham’s debut novel, it was so beautifully written. It’s eerie throughout the entire story and really keeps you on your toes. It’s another one that keeps you wondering and guessing until the last pages, and when you think you know how it will end… Well, I’m telling you now, you’ll be wrong.

I couldn’t recommend this murder mystery thriller more, and I’m so excited to read whatever the author has in store next!

I think that overall this is a good book. It’s a very easy read and the chapters have pretty good cliffhangers that make you want to keep going. It’s 3 stars for me, though, because I am not sure I really enjoyed the writing style of this author as a whole. I wasn’t a huge fan of the way that the main character went into memory in the middle of an otherwise fast paced and/or interesting moment. It really slowed down the momentum of the story and made those moments stagnate a bit. I also found the mystery of it predictable from pretty early on, so the reveals towards the end don’t really hit as hard as they could. I didn’t really connect to the main character either and found some of her leaps of logic very strange. That being said, I don’t think we are necessarily meant to think she is being at all logical, but still, there was just something very frustrating about her that never really gets resolved. There’s more I could say, but I don’t want to go into spoilers. Overall, I liked it enough, but I probably wouldn’t rush to read this author again.

Even though I guessed the twist in the first 20 pages, it was still satisfying to see everything come together and there were pieces of the puzzle that I still found surprising. I really liked how the two timelines kind of bled together in a way that really put you in the main character’s mindset and illustrated how she was having a hard time distinguishing between the past and the present; I thought it was a unique take on both the dual timeline and unreliable narrator tropes that you see in a lot of thrillers. However, some aspects of the final reveal just felt really convenient and didn’t make a ton of sense. For example:
We don’t really see Tyler’s relationship with Cooper in either the past or present, so the fact that he was willing to literally murder for him felt like a convenient plot/shock factor device without a solid foundation behind it.
Overall this was a good read, but not a standout.
