I read The Wonderful Wizard of Oz with my kids last year. We also watched the movie. This was the perfect follow up for both! It was fascinating to read about the author and his wife, as well as some peeks into the film industry.

Much like the rest of the world, the Wizard of Oz has a special place in my heart, so I went into this book super excited. That being said, reading it reminded me why I have such a love-hate relationship with novels portraying real people and their thoughts, feelings, etc - especially those in the more recent past. For me, those kinds of novels always walk the line of feeling a bit like you’re reading fan fiction about real people. This one definitely fell into that category at several points. For this one in particular, since I’ve always been such a Wizard of Oz/old Hollywood nerd, I found myself desperately wishing the book had footnotes in it to clarify what was fact and what was a creative liberty. (Thank goodness the author’s note at the end cleared some things up.) I’m pretty sure there were some big liberties taken with the sections about the filming. Overall, it was enjoyable, and I’d classify it as a YA book since the writing and language and character development felt much simpler than I’d expect out of an adult novel.

DNF at 42%. I do NOT like The Wizard of Oz...the story or the movie...none of it. I’ve never liked it. So I have no idea why I thought I would like this book. Something about the description peaked my interest and I thought maybe I could stomach this.
I was mistaken.
My main issue here was boredom. Neither story was entertaining to me. If I had to choose, I would prefer the 1880’s chapters over the 1930’s, but neither were real engaging for me.
While this book wasn’t for me, I do absolutely recommend it if your a Wizard of Oz fan. It’s very well written, and gives you an insight into the story’s background that many people are unaware of, but for me personally, I’m good with not knowing.

I absolutely loved this book and how it wove together the historical facts about the people that made up the Wizard of Oz. I loved that the book was told from the authors wife’s perspective and how the alternating timelines mesh together to show snippets of what happened in the past and how it was translated into the film in the future. I loved the film then and I love the film now. Seeing how that movie came to be was like peeking behind the wizards curtain.
