I really, really love what Rita Bullwinkel was doing here with the narrative structure, characters, and messaging. I feel like this is definitely a book that may fall on deaf ears or that just won’t be some’s cup of tea, BUT if you’re interested in a kaleidoscopic look at girl-womanhood where past, present, and future exist in tandem over the course of the finals of a young women’s boxing tournament, then perhaps check this out.

What a fascinating concept. Everyone is their own protagonist, so why not tell a story in which everyone is a protagonist and the story is driven by the set beginning, middle, and end that is a tournament? I love it. That said, I could only tell you little snippets about each of the fighters, because I didn't really get enough time with them. But it was still fun and intriguing and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

it was allllmost what i wanted. certain stylistic choices kept getting more in the way of the experience as opposed to heightening it for me (endless line breaks, overuse of full names in sentences, some of the repetitive sentences but not all). maybe i am just reacting negatively to the more difficult (?) creative project of following 8 obsessive athlete protags instead of one à la stephen florida? in that context it is impressive, and i did like many moments in each girl’s pov.
the switch to the outsider pov for the final fight and then the “future” section….. not too sure about that. we don’t get rose’s pov after winning at all?!
we are supposed to remember the legacy of women fighting. and i do like it and i do remember it. did i need to be told? eh. blerg aliens
also i think im being negative bc my stomach rlly hurts rn like so bad
