Headshot is a YA boxing character study. I really, really wish authors would stop naming characters extremely similar names. Iggy and Izzy are cousins, not twins, but I can't tell you which one is the older one. As far as character studies go, this is decent, formulated through the 12th Annual Daughters of America boxing championship, fight by fight, round by round, with an omniscient narrator taking a step back from the present to reveal both the past and futures of these girls. I feel very meh about this overall. It's fine, but I prefer first person character novels, and the repetition of the girls' names, which are way too similar overall, made the narrative feel disconnected from the characters' stories. I don't feel like I really know any of these girls beyond what one might read in a newspaper article like Sam's.

This novel is about eight women/girls that are fighting in a woman's boxing tournament.  Each chapter is a fight between two of the women.  It details the fight, but it also gives back story and future story of each of the women.  It was a very interesting way to write a book that I quite enjoyed.  I liked all of the characters and was interested to read about them.  The fighting wasn't as much as I thought it was going to be and I appreciated that.  Going into this book I wasn't sure if I would like it, but I was pleasantly surprised.

The snapshot style of writing was a bit off-putting at the start but I liked it more as I continued. Each match were two contrasting in-depth character studies of the girl boxers that extended to their futures as well. All 8 girls were written intricately different. It’s a pretty quick read.
