this one's for the people who love a good girl/animal metaphor. the immediacy in this book was palpable and though i did find myself getting a bit fatigued by the end, i liked it enough to chalk it up to part of the necessary reading experience. it's hard spending so long so deep in someone's mind, let alone eight someones, let alone eight teenage girls.

An interesting read for sure. I found the polyvocal use of narrative voice, and boxing-match structure to be the backbone of this book. Without this, it wouldn't have worked so well, and may have veered on dull. The internality of the book was it's driving factor which, for someone who could not care less about boxing, kept me turning the pages. I especially loved the perfectionism of izzy and deliberate weirdness of Iggy as devices to dominate their matches. I enjoyed the omniscient narrative moments, where we would find out the future of each of these teens, almost rendering the match itself futile against life's longevity. Though enjoyable, at times it felt like the author didn't know what her intentions were. Definitely enjoyable but definitely not a fave.

Punchy is the word!!! Loved the style and form of this. Really great evocative characterisation and exploration of the brutality of boxing/being a teenage girl. Hard to believe this is a debut novel, excited to see more from Rita Bullwinkel!

I’m surprised by how much I actually enjoyed this one. It’s fresh and inventive and an ode to teenage girls and their fortitude. I think it’s great.
