A very sweet story with amazing illustrations, this would make a nice group read aloud. Hana wants to play like her grandfather, but she's only had three lessons when she signs up for the school talent show. Her brothers are afraid she's going to be embarrassed, but she's determined. I love that she practices and practices to get better and the twist ending is awesome!

Some of the language in this story was so lovely and lyrical that I stopped and reread it so I could revel in its beauty. The illustrations elevate the text even more. This is a wonderful book to read aloud to students and spark a conversation about perseverance and doing what you love, even if other people tell you to stop.

This was so endearing and sweet! I loved the soft illustrations and how Hana practiced *her* way of playing the violin, honouring her grandfather. I imagine this would be a lovely story to read before bedtime!

A. She is determined and loves her family. This connects the reader to her because we all want to honor our family and want to win our challenges. We root for her!
B. Family, Citizenship, Bravery. She is honoring her family and country through performing in the talent show—this took courage and bravery.

"Finally, as the last sound effect trailed away, Hana tucked her bow and violin under her arm. 'And that, she said to the audience, 'is how I play the violin.'"

Super cute without being too much. Love the charming illustrations, and the realistic nature of the story. Hana is new to violin, she isn't great at it yet, but she's learning, and it's a worthwhile endeavour. Practicing violin isn't always exciting, sometimes her dog doesn't want to listen to her. Her brothers give her a hard time, but ultimately support her. A bit heavy on text for a story time maybe, and the story is a bit more subtle than I would use for a group, but would definitely display. Lovely.
